Purse : The $100,000 tournament offers a first-place prize of $14,000.

Tech-Alabama opener will be matchup of top-10 teams
BLACKSBURG—As expected, Virginia Tech’s season-opening game against Alabama will be a meeting of top-10 teams—at least according to the USA Today coaches’ poll. The Top 25 poll, released yesterday, ranks Alabama fifth and Tech seventh. Both teams almost certainly will be ranked in the top 10 of the upcoming Associated Press Top 25, adding some juice to an already much-anticipated meeting, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, and nationally televised on ABC.

What to do? How to act? Little Leaguers receive help
the trip to Saitama, Japan, will live, sleep and dine with a Japanese family while overseas. Delegation head John Walker and coach Tom Goode attempted to prepare their young athletes for the experience by giving each player a list of cultural guidelines. Among the suggestions offered to the 11-12-year-old boys:
When greeting the Japanese, you should bow with your hands in front of you while making eye contact with the person you are greeting. The lower the bow, the more respectful the bow.
Favre’s return? Never mind
Brett Favre won’t be coming out of retirement to play for Minnesota. Vikings coach Brad Childress confirmed to The Associated Press in a text message yesterday that the three-time MVP quarterback for the Green Bay Packers would not join his team when training camp opens later this week. Favre’s decision was first reported by The Star Tribune on its Web site.
