On this date 1909 - The Philadelphia Phillies were rained out for the 10th consecutive day, a major league record. 1913 - The Chicago Cubs tagged Grover Alexander for nine straight hits and six runs for a 10-4 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies. 1921 - Detroit’s Ty Cobb got his 3,000th career hit at age 34, the youngest player to reach that plateau. The milestone hit was a single off Elmer Myers of the Boston Red Sox.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP TIGERS 5, MARINERS 3: Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth and Rick Porcello had a career-high eight strikeouts to lift Detroit. Seattle’s Felix Hernandez was taken out after he struck out nine and gave up only a run through seven and the Tigers took advantage. RAYS 5, ORIOLES 4: Gabe Gross hit a two-run homer, and Pat Burrell and B.J. Upton (Chesapeake) added solo shots to lead Tampa Bay past Baltimore. Gross gave the Rays a 3-2 lead with his fourth-inning drive. Burrell and Upton homered in the sixth to make it 5-2. ANGELS 5, INDIANS 4: Trevor Bell got his first major league win, helping Los Angeles beat Cleveland. Bell gave up three runs and nine hits over 51/3 innings in the second start of his career. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning and retired nine of his final 11 batters. RED SOX 10, BLUE JAYS 9: David Ortiz homered and scored three times, including the go-ahead run in the eighth, and Boston beat Toronto. BRAVES 9, DIAMONDBACKS 4: Ryan Church hit a three-run double in a six-run third inning that lifted Atlanta. Tommy Hanson (8-2) gave up six hits, no walks and two runs in six innings for his third straight win. The game was rescheduled following a May 17 rainout at Turner Field. GIANTS 10, METS 1: Aaron Rowand homered and had four hits, and San Francisco won to split the four-game series. Pinch-hitter Nate Schierholtz chased Livan Hernandez (7-8) with a two-run double in a three-run sixth inning that broke it open. Randy Winn added three hits for the Giants. PIRATES 9, BREWERS 5: Andy LaRoche, Garrett Jones and Ronny Cedeno homered and Pittsburgh won for only the second time in its past 14 games. AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP ROYALS 3, TIGERS 2 (10): Josh Anderson scored the go-ahead run in the 10th on third baseman Ryan Raburn’s third error of the game, lifting Kansas City. Anderson reached on a dribbler down the third-base line, and David DeJesus followed with a grounder between Raburn’s legs. RAYS 5, BLUE JAYS 2: Gregg Zaun hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth, leading Tampa Bay past Toronto. After Willy Aybar was intentionally walked to load the bases and pinch-hitter Gabe Gross struck out during a 10-pitch at-bat, Zaun sent a 3-2 pitch into the right-field seats. RANGERS 4, RED SOX 3: Ian Kinsler homered and drove in two runs, Dustin Nippert pitched six solid innings and Texas passed Boston in the AL wild card race. Kinsler, back in the lineup one day after he was hit by a pitch that ricocheted off his head, went deep and had an RBI single. INDIANS 7, TWINS 4: Kelly Shoppach and Luis Valbuena hit back-to-back homers, and Grady Sizemore added a two-run shot in a six-run third inning as Cleveland beat Minnesota. Sizemore finished with a pair of hits, a walk, two RBI and two runs. ANGELS 17, ORIOLES 8 (13): Torii Hunter celebrated his return from the disabled list by driving in the go-ahead run in a nine-run 13th inning, and Los Angeles outlasted Baltimore. Chone Figgins had four hits for the Angels, including the 1,000th of his career, an RBI single in the sixth. ATHLETICS 3, WHITE SOX 2: Mark Ellis lined a homer just over the left-field wall with two outs in the ninth, and Oakland avoided a three-game sweep against Chicago. Scott Hairston hit a tying double with two outs in the eighth off former A’s closer Octavio Dotel. MARINERS 10, YANKEES 3: Jose Lopez had three hits and three RBI and Seattle beat New York, ending the Yankees’ five-game winning streak.
