1867—Ruthless, ridden by J. Gilpatrick, wins the inaugural Belmont Stakes at Jerome Park in the Bronx. The filly earns $1,850 for her victory. 1914—Harry Vardon wins his sixth and final British Open by shooting a 306, three strokes ahead of J.H. Taylor at Prestwick Club. 1936—German heavyweight boxer Max Schmeling knocks out previously unbeaten Joe Louis in the 12th round. Schmeling’s victory sets off a propaganda war between the Nazi regime and the United States on the eve of World War II.

DEALS   Cincinnati - Placed RHP Mike Lincoln on the 15-day DL, retroactive to June 6. Recalled RHP Josh Roenicke from Louisville (IL).    Minnesota - Announced the contract of coach Kevin McHale will not be renewed.   Washington - Re-signed LW Quintin Laing to a one-year contract.

Sports Briefs: ACC title game to be back on prime-time  06/18/09 12:01 AM

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference’s football championship game is moving back to prime-time television. The ACC said yesterday this year’s game will kick off at 8 p.m. on Dec. 5 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. ESPN will broadcast the game. It’s the first prime-time kickoff for the ACC title game since the inaugural contest in 2005. The game has started at 1 p.m. in each of the past three seasons. ABC televised the first four title games.
