Pixar goes ‘Up’ with $68.2 million debut weekend
LOS ANGELES (AP)—The animated action comedy “Up” took flight with a $68.2 million opening weekend, maintaining a perfect box-office track record for Pixar Animation, whose 10 films all have been commercial and critical hits.

Up.“ The title is deceptively simple, which is fitting, because the latest achievement from Disney/Pixar Animation is deeper and more complex on every level than it would initially appear. It’s a classic B-movie exotic adventure, the kind that inspired Steven Spielberg and George Lucas to make “Raiders of the Lost Ark,“ but it’s told through the most high-tech, gorgeous 3-D animation.

Animation gets respect at Cannes
CANNES, France After nine hits and four Academy Awards for films including “WALL-E” and “Ratatouille,“ the Pixar Animation gang finally feels it has made it to the grown-ups’ table with “Up,“ the first animated movie to open the Cannes Film Festival. The Oscars compartmentalize animated films into their own category. Audiences often do the same, lumping animation in as a genre meant mainly for kids. But Pixar’s creative minds feel the choice of “Up” as the Cannes curtain-raiser signals that animation can stand alongside the best that live-action films might offer.

Mish-mash ‘Bolt’ fails to find its way whole
In the preview for the new animated family comedy “Bolt,“ it’s all hamster, all the time. That was a smart move by the marketing people. The hamster, whose name is Rhino, is by far the best thing in the movie. He isn’t funny, exactly, but he is funnyish, which will have to do. The problem is, he doesn’t show up until the film is halfway over.
