FARMVILLE—Shawn Minor was a threat on all fronts, passing for two touchdowns, rushing for one and returning a punt for yet another score in the No. 7 Indians’ Southside District romp. Powhatan (6-0, 9-0) hit on all cylinders early. Larry Bradley carried seven times for 109 yards and the first score of the game before getting the rest of the night off.

Powhatan (19-3) claimed its 6th straight Southside District championship yesterday with a decisive victory over Bluestone. Brianna Barton had 7 aces and 18 digs for the Indians. No. 1 Powhatan (18-3) defeated No. 4 Park View yesterday in the semifinals of the Southside District. Janie Goodman had three kills, Ginna Tucker had eight digs and Brooke Strathy had 10 assists for the Indians. Powhatan will host the finals today, taking on the winner of No. 3 Bluestone vs. No. 2 Southampton. The Indians will also play Courtland in the quarterfinals of the regional tournament.

POWHATAN—Injuries to a couple of defensive players meant Powhatan coach Jim Woodson and his longtime defensive coordinator Ernie Henderson had to shuffle some players around for the Indians’ Southside District game with Brunswick. Shawn Minor, the Indians’ quarterback, but also a premier cornerback, shifted to safety, a position he’s played before. Ellis Moore, a 6-4 wide receiver and the Indians’ place kicker, stepped in at free safety. It was his first game on defense.

Keep it simple. That’s the mantra the coaches preach at Powhatan. “We don’t run a whole lot of plays,“ coach Jim Woodson said. “It took me a long time to figure that out as a coach. At the beginning, I figured I’d try to outsmart everybody and trick them and have so many plays they wouldn’t know how to defend it. We were tricking ourselves because we didn’t know how to do it.“

Type text of update here. SKIPWITH—Dion Berry scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and the eighth-ranked Indians rolled past the Barons in a Southside District game. Berry finished with 108 yards on nine carries. Landon Bradley ran for 62 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter and Shawn Minor added a touchdown pass to Josh Ingram. Ray Brown ran for 73 yards and two touchdowns in the second half to round off a 340-yard rushing effort from the Indians (4-0, 7-0).

Landon Bradley picked up 170 yards on 21 carries and snagged an interception in No. 7 Powhatan’s homecoming rout of Southampton (1-2 Southside). Powhatan’s Shawn more punched in two rushing TDs. Darius Nash (10 tackles, one for loss), Joey Blanco (9 tackles, one for loss) and Colin Christovich (8 tackles) led the Powhatan (3-0, 6-0) defense.

EMPORIA—Landon Bradley rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Indians to a Southside District victory. Bradley scored on runs of 40, 60 and 2 yards. Shawn Minor added 68 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and had three interceptions on defense. He returned one 30 yards for a touchdown. Powhatan (2-0 Southside, 5-0) got nine tackles from Josh Morris and Darius Nash had eight tackles and a sack as it held Greensville County (0-2, 0-5) to 126 total yards, including just 37 on the ground.
