Offense: Benedictine has a strong receiving corps led by senior Drew Petrohovich (6-5, 185, Sr.). His twin brother, QB Greg Petrohovich (6-5, 195, Sr.), leads the offense again this year. Both are in the top 20 players to watch. The offense will be young in spots with a few sophomores seeing action, including WR Charley Meyer (6-1, 190, So.) and TE Nigel Williams (6-3, 240, So.).

Vinson spearheads Group AAA all-state team
AAA softball Times-Dispatch softball player of the year Lauren Vinson of Prince George headlines the Richmond area selections to the Virginia High School Coaches Association Group AAA all-state team. Joining Vinson, who spearheaded the Royals’ first Central Region championship and advancement to the state semifinals, are Leona Rainey of Mills Godwin and Morgan Reynolds of Cosby. Rainey was the Colonial District and Central Region player of the year. Reynolds was the Dominion District player of the year.

Taliaferro honored at Powhatan graduation
If Tahliek Taliaferro were alive, he would have walked across the stage at Powhatan High School yesterday to receive his diploma. He would have been 19 and among nearly 300 students who make up the Class of 2009. Instead, his teary grandmother accepted an honorary diploma for her grandson to a round of applause at yesterday’s graduation ceremony.

Powhatan claims win in softball
Kelsey Waugh went 2 for 3 with a triple and scored a run as Powhatan defeated King George 3-1 in the Group AA, Region I tournament quarterfinals yesterday. Starter Jessica Brooks struck out five in 21/3 innings, and reliever Rachael Walters finished with eight strikeouts and allowed only one baserunner. Liz Sill added an RBI double for the Indians.

Gabby Taylor scored 16 points and controlled the ball on both sides of the court as Greensville defeated Powhatan in the Southside District semifinals.
