The rains have stopped, the regular season games and meets are winding down and playoffs are being played at private schools. Time is short and schools are scrambling to finish their seasons.

Rain has wreaked havoc with high school sports schedules all spring. Activities directors have called it the worst spring they can remember. Once the rain stops, the scramble is on to complete the regular season and prepare for district, region and state tournaments.

If the weather will ever cooperate, high school spring sports action can escape the stop and start mode of the past month. Spring break is over, and there’s a month left in the regular season for baseball, softball and boys and girls soccer. Boys and girls tennis and track have less than that before beginning district tournaments and meets.

The Petersburg and John Marshall boys and the Cosby and Atlee girls are competing in the state Group AAA basketball tournament quarterfinals this weekend. The semifinals and finals are at the Seigel Center next week.

Berths in the Central Region basketball tournament championship games are up for grabs in the semifinals at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center. Thursday night’s girls semifinals match Hanover against Cosby at 6 p.m. and Atlee against Mills Godwin at 7:45. Friday’s boys semis are Petersburg vs. Henrico and Highland Springs vs. John Marshall. In addition to advancing to Monday’s title games—girls at 6 p.m.; boys at 7:45—semifinals winners earn spots in the state Group AAA tournament.

The Petersburg boys basketball team reigns as the No. 1 team in the Central Region and state entering the regular-season stretch run to the postseason tournaments. Meanwhile, some of the best young players in the commonwealth will be center stage Saturday at Benedictine in Slamfest VIII.
