Marker recognizes free black community of Israel Hill
A new state historical marker recognizes Farmville’s Israel Hill, a community of free blacks settled in the early 19th century and saluted for its lasting contributions amid adversity. The Farmville-Prince Edward County Historical Society joined with local officials and descendants in a recent recognition ceremony. Israel Hill was settled by about 90 people in 1810 and 1811 who had received their freedom and 350 acres from Judith Randolph, the widow of Richard Randolph, who had directed the emancipation in his will.

Farmville victims died from blunt force trauma
The Prince Edward County prosecutor this morning officially confirmed the identities of four people found slain Friday in the home of a Longwood University professor and said the cause of death for each was blunt force trauma to the head.

Man shoots self after killing two, Prince Edward sheriff says
FARMVILLE—A Pamplin man who officers said killed his wife and a man in the parking lot of a Prince Edward County nightclub before shooting himself remained in critical but stable condition yesterday. Sheila Anderson Carter, 46, and Mandel Brandon Jones, 35, of Dillwyn were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds early Monday morning, said Prince Edward County Sheriff Travis Harris Jr.

Prince Edward man suspected in double killing remains in critical condition
A Pamplin man suspected of gunning down his wife and a man in the parking lot of a Prince Edward County nightclub before shooting himself remains in critical but stable condition, Prince Edward County Sheriff Travis Harris Jr. said.
