Dale City girls report rape after trick-or-treating  11/02/09 12:01 AM

DALE CITY—Two teenage girls reported being abducted and raped after trick-or-treating Saturday. About 9:10 p.m., police were called to investigate the abduction of three teenage girls. The victims told police they were walking in the area of Glendale Plaza in the 4300 block of Dale Boulevard after trick-or-treating, Prince William County police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez said.

N.Va. man killed by lightning in N.C.  07/30/09 12:01 AM

Matthew Glomb had been looking forward to spending time with his son this week on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. But the trip ended tragically Monday evening when Glomb was struck by lightning while jogging along the beach near his retirement home. Rescue officials in Southern Shores, N.C., said he was killed instantly. Glomb’s Lake Ridge neighbor and a good friend of nearly 30 years, Joe Malinowski, said Glomb spent a lot of time at the beach and was excited about the family getaway.

Prince William County lawyer killed by lightning on Outer Banks  07/29/09 8:22 AM

SOUTHERN SHORES, N.C.—A Justice Department lawyer from Prince William County, Va., was killed Monday when he was struck by lightning while jogging on the beach near his retirement home. Matthew Glomb was killed instantly, rescue officials said. The retired Coast Guard officer had been vacationing with his wife Emily, and their son and daughter.

Elizabeth Walter spent a week in the hospital after her boyfriend stabbed her 14 times. She was 14 years old. Since then, her boyfriend has been sent to prison and now, four years later, Walter spends her time highlighting the dangers of becoming involved with gangs. She speaks to children and teenagers at local schools, and though she never officially joined a gang, her boyfriend was a gang member. She said she was drawn to him and the dangerous lifestyle when she was younger. While she was with her boyfriend, Daniel, she had his name tattooed on various spots on her body, most prominently on her right shoulder.

Craig S. Gerhart, the county executive for Prince William County whose chief job is to oversee day-to-day operations and personnel, announced his retirement Wednesday to take a position with Amtrak. He begins a full-time independent contractor position with the company as an organizational strategist for the policy and development department July 6, three days after his retirement with Prince William takes effect, according to the release.

State police investigate N.Va. road rage  05/24/09 12:01 AM

Heavy Memorial Day traffic on Virginia highways has sparked at least one incident of road rage. The drivers of two cars began arguing Friday afternoon and started to display “some type of road-rage behavior” while traveling south on Interstate 95 near milepost 157 in Woodbridge, said Corinne Geller, a Virginia State Police spokeswoman.

July execution set in 1999 slaying in Manassas  05/22/09 12:01 AM

Paul Warner Powell raped and stabbed the murder victim’s 14-year-old sister in the same attack. A July 14 execution has been set for a Prince William County man sentenced to death in part because of a taunting letter he wrote to his prosecutor. Unless the U.S. Supreme Court or Gov. Timothy M. Kaine intervenes, Paul Warner Powell, 31, will be executed by electrocution or lethal injection for the 1999 fatal stabbing and attempted rape of Stacey Reed, 16, of Manassas.

Va. death-row case sent back to lower court  05/12/09 12:01 AM

A federal appeals court yesterday sent Virginia death-row inmate Justin M. Wolfe’s case back to a lower federal court for reconsideration. Wolfe was convicted in Prince William County of the January 2002 murder-for-hire of his marijuana supplier, Daniel Robert Petrole Jr., 21, whom Wolfe owed more than $60,000. Wolfe paid Owen M. Barber IV, a high school friend, to commit the murder.

Man charged in fatal N.Va. crash  04/09/09 12:01 AM

A grand jury in Prince William Circuit Court this week indicted a Manassas man on an involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with a fatal car crash. Police said that Stephen McDonald, 21, of the 9500 block of Battery Heights Boulevard in Manassas, was the driver in the Jan. 24 crash that killed 21-year-old Kevin Simpson of Bumpass.
