State roundup: Guilford ends R-MC streak  11/01/09 12:01 AM

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Thaddeus Scruggs pounded out 115 yards on 23 carries, but Randolph-Macon fell to Guilford 20-13 yesterday, ending a five-game win streak. Brandon Harrison had eight tackles and forced a fumble for the Yellow Jackets (3-1, 5-3). Earl Peoples added four catches for 84 yards in the loss. Guilford’s Billy Watkin led the Quakers (1-3, 2-6) with 35 completions for 378 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

On rare occasions, even the most seasoned football aficionados get the chance to say, “I have never seen that happen before in my life.“ Sometimes, historians are forced to examine the record books to see if it had been done. Take the case of Randolph-Macon junior wide receiver Earl Peoples, who made 20 catches—and every completion the team had last Saturday—amassing 295 yards in leading the Yellow Jackets to a 21-13 victory over Washington and Lee.

Randolph-Macon graduates 201

A juggler and a dog aren’t common sights at commencement ceremonies. But yesterday’s graduation of 201 students at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland contained a bit of levity with the pomp and circumstance. Commencement speaker Thomas R. Morris, secretary of education for Virginia, told the graduates that they now join the one-third of adults in Virginia who hold a baccalaureate degree.
