R-MC names Nathan Davis men’s basketball coach  04/28/09 12:01 AM

Nathan Davis wasn’t actively seeking to leave Colgate, and Denis Kanach wasn’t actively seeking to hire a coach with ties to the Randolph-Macon men’s basketball program. Each is delighted that the other changed his mind. Davis, an R-MC alumnus and former player, late Sunday night accepted a multi-year contract to become the Yellow Jackets’ basketball coach. In the process, he made history. Never before has Randolph-Macon, a 179-year-old institution, hired an African-American as a coach.

UR assistant Brunt, former R-MC player and aide, will not pursue R-MC job  04/24/09 12:01 AM

If it were some other time, perhaps University of Richmond assistant basketball coach Jamal Brunt would pursue the head coaching job at Randolph-Macon, where he played and was an assistant coach. But not now. Brunt, 28, said this week he loves R-MC and still has close relationships with members of the R-MC athletic administration. But he very much appreciates the opportunity UR head coach Chris Mooney gave him two years ago (elevated from director of basketball operations to assistant coach) and has no interest in the R-MC job. Yellow Jackets coach Mike Rhoades left R-MC earlier this month to join the staff at VCU.

    R-MC to face top-ranked team  11/17/08 1:01 AM

The euphoria that followed Randolph-Macon’s unlikely ascent to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference football championship lasted only 24 hours. The Yellow Jackets, who completed a giddy late-season surge with Saturday’s 31-21 victory over archrival Hampden-Sydney, were treated harshly by the NCAA Division III selection committee during yesterday’s distribution of first-round playoff assignments. R-MC (6-4) must travel to Alliance, Ohio, for a Nov. 22 date with unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Mount Union (10-0). The contest will begin at noon.
