The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Jackson Ward is exhibiting “Reunion of the Spirit: A Photographer’s Journey to Ghana, West Africa,“ featuring the work of James L. Thornhill.  According to executive director Maureen Elgersman Lee, Thornhill grew up in Jackson Ward. His photographs chronicle his physical and spiritual journey to answer his questions about his relationship to Africa. The images range from the haunting Elmina Castle—used to house Africans bound for the Caribbean at the onset of the slave trade in the 16th century—to those of natural beauty as well as the faces of the country’s women and children.
