SCHEV accepts college remediation plans
The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia has accepted remediation plans by Richard Bland College and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise intended to bring the schools into compliance with certification standards.

UPDATE: Man fatally shot as police serve warrant in Dinwiddie
DINWIDDIE—A man was shot and fatally wounded this morning while Virginia State Police and federal agents were serving a search warrant at a house in Dinwiddie County. State police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said no law-enforcement officers were wounded in the shooting, which occurred about 6:05 a.m. at a residence in the 10000 block of Halifax Road, a short distance from a rear entrance of Richard Bland College.

3 colleges fall short on state-mandated performance goals
Virginia State University and two colleges were told yesterday to come up with remedial plans to address why they have failed to meet certain performance standards required under state law. VSU, Richard Bland College and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise were at risk of losing their certification for falling short of benchmarks related primarily to their graduation rates.

Ground broken for building at Richard Bland College
A $19 million building under construction at Richard Bland College in Prince George County will provide more classroom space to a campus that is growing. The project is the latest in a series of renovations and additions during the past year. The Science and Technology Building, a three-story structure with 52,000 square feet, will house classrooms for computer labs, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. The building also will have seminar rooms, laboratories, office space, a faculty lounge and a student lounge.

Virginia Tech, VMI and Richard Bland College students graduate
For a moment, it appeared that the timing could not have been worse. As the band played the final notes of “Pomp and Circumstance” and the last of the students took their seats on Worsham Field, the first drops of rain began to fall. Black clouds rolled in from behind Lane Stadium’s south end zone as Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger addressed the Class of 2009.
