Business forum discusses future of Coliseum
If he had to replace one building to make Richmond a more desirable venue for sports and entertainment, Steven L. Terrill doesn’t have to think twice about his choice. “The Coliseum,“ he said. Terrill is the associate principal of the sports and entertainment division of HKS, one of the country’s leading architectural firms for sports and entertainment venues. HKS has an office in Richmond and yesterday, Terrill was part of a four-member discussion group at The Venture Forum held at the Richmond Historical Society. The topic was the business of sports in Richmond.

Music review: Journey and Night Ranger
Let us all pause for a moment and hoist our lighters. No, not our cell phones. That’s so cold and impersonal and . . . 2009. Instead, let’s relish the guilty pleasure rock brought to the Richmond Coliseum last night by Journey and Night Ranger. Between them, the bands churned out about 30 hits in the ‘70s and ‘80s—and Journey is still romping around adult contemporary radio with new singer Arnel Pineda and topping the iTunes charts with its rediscovered “Don’t Stop Believin’.“

Radio City Rockettes coming to Richmond Coliseum
Rockettes coming for Richmond shows To many people, Radio City Music Hall and the Rockettes are synonymous with Christmas. This year, fans of the song-and-dance spectacle don’t have to trek to New York for the privilege, because the “Radio City Christmas Spectacular,“ featuring the Rockettes, will be at the Richmond Coliseum for two shows.

New local team will play AIFA all-stars
The American Indoor Football Association will hold its annual all-star game in Richmond next year. The game will be at Richmond Coliseum on Jan. 23 and feature a format that pits AIFA all-stars against the new Richmond team. It will be held at the beginning of the season and will be the first game for the currently unnamed team. Later this week, the league will hold a news conference to announce the week’s festivities, which will be anchored at the downtown Marriott. The game also will be televised via syndication.

With 1.3 million members in the U.S. and Canada, Jehovah’s Witnesses reported the fastest growth rate — 2.25 percent — of all churches, a survey says. The denomination ranks 24th among a list of the nation’s 25 largest.

Arena football team accepting ideas for nicknames
Richmond’s newest sports franchise is looking for a name. The AIFA, an indoor football league that plans to move into the Richmond Coliseum next spring, is soliciting ideas from fans on what the team should be called. Gun-rights advocates say Coliseum staff challenged free-speech rights
The Virginia Citizens Defense League is used to fighting for the right to carry guns. But now it’s having to defend the right to wear stickers about carrying guns. The group says officials at the Richmond Coliseum recently attempted to stop members from handing out blaze-orange “Guns Save Lives” stickers before an appearance by radio and television talk-show host Glenn Beck.

Glenn Beck says he preaches common sense
Whoopi Goldberg called him a “lying sack o’ dog mess” on national TV less than two weeks ago. Penn Jillette visited Beck’s Fox News show and questioned his feelings about gay people. Regular folks who watch his nightly TV show or listen to his syndicated radio program either consider him a hero or a raving lunatic. Could Glenn Beck be any more polarizing?
