Richmond index rebounds
The stocks of the Richmond area’s largest publicly traded companies rallied in the second quarter but not nearly as much as the national indices. The Richmond index of 20 public companies rose 7.6 percent during the second quarter, which ended yesterday. By comparison, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 11 percent and the S&P 500 index increased 15.2 percent, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite shot up 20.1 percent.

Massey Energy Co.: up 93.08 percent
NewMarket Corp.: up 51.99 percent
MeadWestvaco Corp.: up 36.86 percent
Owens & Minor Inc.: up 32.27 percent
James River Coal Co.: up 22.61 percent
CarMax Inc.: up 18.17 percent
Dynex Capital Inc.: up 16.81 percent

Richmond stock index fell in first quarter
The stocks of the Richmond area’s largest publicly traded companies posted a decline in the first three months of the year but still fared better than two national indexes. The Richmond Index of 19 public companies fell 4.96 percent during the first quarter. The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a 13.3 percent decline, and the S&P 500 Index lost 11.67 percent. The Nasdaq composite lost 3.07 percent during the same time period.
