A red light flashed on a computer screen inside the squad car, signaling a priority call: Robbery outside the Econo Lodge on Midlothian Turnpike. No gun displayed. Suspect in a black puffy jacket. Last seen fleeing toward Carnation Street. It wasn’t necessarily an unusual robbery call, but on Saturday night, a pair of officers from Richmond’s SWAT team hurried toward the scene.

Spotsylvania County Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Thomas Shaia confirmed yesterday that he will act as prosecutor in the case against three Richmond police officers charged with obstruction of justice. Shaia served as a Richmond prosecutor for about four years beginning in 1988, and he also worked as a prosecutor in Henrico County and for the Virginia attorney general’s office.

Drug program grads get second chance for new life  12/19/08 12:01 AM

They came in their Sunday best, with their brightest smiles—and, after a bit, plenty of tears. For the 10 newest graduates of Richmond’s Adult Drug Court program also came with histories of up to 35 years of addiction. Addictions that they beat. “I remember the judge said: ‘This woman is hopeless. I was in a state of hopelessness. . . . I am so grateful this new way of life has come about,“ said Renay Vanettan, whose 26-year addiction had left her living on the streets when she wasn’t back in jail.

Richmond Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood yesterday named a former colleague from Connecticut as his chief of staff. Sydney G. Collier, a police lieutenant in New Haven, Conn., will serve as a major under Norwood effective Jan. 5.
