RRHA to ask Richmond to lend it up to $1.4 million  09/29/09 12:01 AM

The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority will ask the city today for a loan of up to $1.4 million to fill a deepening shortfall in the housing-voucher program for low-income families. The loan would cover an expected deficit of more than $600,000 by the end of December, as well as make up an additional shortfall of about $800,000 projected next year because of shrinking federal funding for the rental subsidies.

RRHA freezes rent subsidies for 43 more families  09/22/09 12:01 AM

The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority has frozen rent subsidies for an additional 43 low-income families because of a federal funding crunch. The families were notified last week that housing vouchers issued to them no longer were valid and that they would remain indefinitely on a waiting list for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Housing Choice Voucher Program, known as Section 8.

GRTC site to be used for affordable housing?  07/18/09 12:01 AM

Richmond plans a public debate over the future of GRTC Transit System’s historic headquarters next to the Fan District, but the role of affordable housing in the project already is an issue. Affordable housing is listed as the goal of Mayor Dwight C. Jones and the mission of the Richmond Redevelopment & Housing Authority in a written proposal for the city to buy the property, which is appraised at up to $5.4 million.

Street in Richmond’s Carver neighborhood is set for widening  07/12/09 12:01 AM

An alley-like street in Richmond’s Carver neighborhood is slated for widening and might spell the demolition of several homes. City officials said the design work to widen the 1200 block of Catherine Street, between Harrison and Norton streets, is preliminary and there has been no determination that the four rental properties will have to come down.

Ex-Wilder aide assists RRHA in pursuing stimulus funds  06/17/09 12:01 AM

The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority is pursuing federal stimulus funds with the help of a Washington-based consulting firm and former Richmond Chief Financial Officer Harry E. Black. Black, a key aide to then-Mayor L. Douglas Wilder, is working as a part-time senior adviser for B&D Consulting. RRHA hired the firm in April to draft a plan to match potential funding opportunities with the authority’s needs and projects. The $12,000per-month contract is set to expire next month but is eligible to be extended.

Louise C. Toney, former RRHA official, dies at 86  02/12/09 12:01 AM

“We are not rubber stamps,“ Louise Christian Toney said as chairwoman of the board of commissioners of the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. She was referring to the authority’s relationship with the City Council. In 1989, disagreements on downtown project planning, funding and oversight led to the firing of one authority official and resignation of another, as well as public demonstrations.
