AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP BLUE JAYS 5, YANKEES 4: Lyle Overbay and Aaron Hill hit solo homers, and Toronto’s bullpen shut down high-powered New York, ending the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak. Overbay drove in two runs, and Edwin Encarnacion and Joe Inglett also drove in runs for the Blue Jays. RED SOX 6, TIGERS 5: Nick Green hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly and one of Boston’s three homers in a win over Detroit that ended a six-game losing streak. Dustin Pedroia and Jason Bay also homered for the Red Sox, who were coming off a four-game sweep by the Yankees. ATHLETICS 9, ORIOLES 1: Rookie Gio Gonzalez took a five-hit shutout into the seventh inning, and Mark Ellis totaled a career-high five hits and four RBI as Oakland beat Baltimore for the ninth straight time. Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless eighth, and Fernando Rodney closed the game for his 23rd save in 24 chances. The Twins’ Michael Cuddyer (Chesapeake) hit two home runs. BLUE JAYS 7, ORIOLES 3: Roy Halladay won his 10th straight decision over Baltimore, and Vernon Wells and Marco Scutaro hit two-run homers in a four-run third to lead Toronto. Halladay allowed three runs and nine hits in eight innings, walked one and struck out four. ATHLETICS 6, ROYALS 3: Bobby Crosby homered twice and Ryan Sweeney hit a three-run shot, lifting Oakland over Kansas City. Sweeney and Crosby hit consecutive homers in the second off Luke Hochevar to stake Brett Anderson to a 4-0 lead. INDIANS 8, WHITE SOX 4: Jamey Carroll hit a go-ahead RBI double in the fourth and added a solo homer in the seventh, leading Cleveland over Chicago for its third straight series win against a division rival. A.J. Pierzynski and Alexei Ramirez hit solo home runs for the White Sox. RANGERS 7, ANGELS 0: Rookie Derek Holland threw a three-hitter against the majors’ highest-scoring offense for his first career shutout, and Texas gained ground on AL West-leading Los Angeles. Holland, 22, didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning of his 12th career start. MARINERS 11, RAYS 2: Russell Branyan broke out of a slump with his first grand slam in six years, Ryan Rowland-Smith rebounded from a shaky beginning to pitch effectively into the seventh and Seattle rolled over Tampa Bay. AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP ORIOLES 7, BLUE JAYS 5: Nolan Reimold had two RBI to help rookie Jason Berken win for the first time since May 26 as Baltimore beat Toronto. Berken allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out six. Jim Johnson closed it out in the ninth for his third save. TIGERS 10, TWINS 8: Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homered in a six-run first inning, and Detroit beat Minnesota. Avila finished with two hits and three RBI, and Placido Polanco added four hits and drove in a run. Joe Mauer homered, knocked in three runs and had four hits for the Twins. INDIANS 6, WHITE SOX 2: Kelly Shoppach hit a two-run homer and added a solo shot, leading Cleveland over Chicago. The Indians won despite grounding into six double plays. Cleveland starter Jeremy Sowers pitched seven-plus innings, allowing two runs and six hits. ATHLETICS 9, ROYALS 4: Vin Mazzaro ended his eight-game losing streak, and Cliff Pennington had his first career three-hit game as Oakland beat Kansas City.
