On this date 1909 - The Philadelphia Phillies were rained out for the 10th consecutive day, a major league record. 1913 - The Chicago Cubs tagged Grover Alexander for nine straight hits and six runs for a 10-4 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies. 1921 - Detroit’s Ty Cobb got his 3,000th career hit at age 34, the youngest player to reach that plateau. The milestone hit was a single off Elmer Myers of the Boston Red Sox.

On this date 1905 - Rube Waddell of the Philadelphia Athletics pitched a five-inning no-hit game to beat the St. Louis Browns 2-0. 1914 - Brooklyn’s Jake Daubert set a NL record with four sacrifice hits in the second game of a doubleheader against Philadelphia. 1916 - In a classic pitching duel, Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox beat Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators, 1-0, in 13 innings at Fenway Park.

On this date 1937 - The Detroit Tigers scored 36 runs (16-1 and 20-7) against the St. Louis Browns in a doubleheader sweep to set a major league record. Pete Fox of the Tigers scored eight of the runs in the doubleheader. 1958 - Vic Power of the Cleveland Indians stole home twice, in the 8th and 10th innings, in a 10-9 win over Detroit. He had only three steals all year.

On this date 1921 - Philadelphia’s George Smith gave up 12 hits and still pitched a shutout as the Phillies beat the Boston Braves 4-0. 1948 - In the second game of a doubleheader, the Cleveland Indians beat the St. Louis Browns 26-3 with a 29-hit barrage. The Indians set a major league record as 14 different players hit safely.

On this date 1907—In the second game of a doubleheader, shortened by agreement, Ed Karger of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched a seven-inning perfect game, beating the Boston Braves 4-0. 1926—Tris Speaker of Cleveland hit his 700th career double, but the Indians lost to the Chicago White Sox, 7-2. The double came in the third inning off Joe Edwards.

On this date 1903 - A week after pitching his first doubleheader triumph, Joe “Iron Man” McGinnity of the New York Giants scored a double victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers 6-1 and 4-3. In the second game, he stole home. 1915 - Philadelphia’s Gavvy Cravath hit four doubles and drove in eight runs in a 14-7 victory over the Reds at Cincinnati.

On this date 1907 - Walter Johnson won the first of his 417 victories, leading the Washington Senators to a 7-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. 1922 - Ken Williams of the St. Louis Browns hit two home runs in the sixth inning of a rout over the Washington Senators. 1923 - Cleveland’s Frank Bower went 6 for 6 with a double and five singles as the Indians routed the Washington Senators 22-2.
Rose problems are inevitable
Read about roses, talk to other gardeners about growing them, and insect and disease problems seem inevitable. Problems begin in the spring, with chewed leaves. No great harm, except that the plants begin to look ragged. This raggedness is mostly a problem if your roses are planted prominently, which makes a case for planting roses in a dedicated cutting garden, just for their cut flowers.

On this date 1908 - John Lush threw a six-inning no-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 2-0. It was Lush’s second no-hitter against the Dodgers. 1952 - Satchel Paige, 46, became the oldest pitcher in major league history to pitch a complete game or shutout when he beat Virgil Trucks and the Detroit Tigers 1-0 in 12 innings.

2 plead guilty to stealing Henrico computers
Two Henrico County men pleaded guilty to breaking and entering as well as grand larceny charges yesterday in Henrico Circuit Court. Rexx Victor Knapp, 20, and Wayne Lee Baker, 33, neighbors who live near Pemberton Elementary School, targeted the county’s Pinchbeck Elementary School and Douglas Freeman High School to steal computers. Both men face as much as 80 years in prison when they are sentenced Oct. 29.

Coombs struck out 18 and allowed three hits. 1929 - The Cleveland Indians, down to their last out and trailing 6-5, scored nine runs in the ninth inning for a 14-6 victory over the New York Yankees.

The record would be tied by the 1947 New York Yankees. 1987 - Kevin Seitzer went 6 for 6, hit two homers and drove in seven runs to pace a 20-hit Kansas City attack as the Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 13-5 in 102-degree heat.

The first hit he yielded was a bunt single by Ty Cobb. The Tigers beat “The Big Train” 7-6 exactly 20 years later on Walter Johnson Day in the nation’s capital.
