GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has a Heisman Trophy, four championship rings and more accolades than most college football players could ever imagine. He wants more. Tebow and the defending national champions opened fall practice Thursday with hopes of winning a third title in four years, and they want this one to be special.

The prospect of an additional $1.5 billion in Virginia spending cuts is making for rare unanimity among legislators, with members of both parties warning that long-protected services such as public education and health care may have to be scaled back. “We have put off some of the hard decision-making,“ said Del. John M. O’Bannon III, R-Henrico, a member of the influential House Appropriations Committee.

Traditionally, the host team in a baseball tournament is the easiest to defeat—it doesn’t have to qualify, instead getting an automatic berth. But if South Richmond’s players start to feel that way about their game tonight in Morgantown, W.Va., coach Byron Ballard will be happy to set them straight. “Sometimes folks think the host team, that oh, you don’t have to worry too much about those guys,“ he said. “But they played us tough last year in Colonial Heights.“

MINNEAPOLIS Randall McDaniel still looks as if he could lower his 6-4, 275-pound frame into that strange, off-balance stance and line up at left guard, poised to plow into the guy on the other side. He has other work to do, though. Fitting with his preference to be in the background during a 14-year NFL career along the relative anonymity of the offensive line, he’s now a full-time basic skills instructor at an elementary school in a Minneapolis suburb spending his time with second-graders born far too late to have seen his success with the Minnesota Vikings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Marty Schottenheimer was walking up the 16th fairway near his Florida home when he noticed a golf cart hurrying toward him. It was someone from the golf shop. “He told me, ‘Coach, you need to call your wife,‘“ Schottenheimer said. Pat Schottenheimer’s voice was urgent. “She said, ‘Marty, they called from Kansas City to say that Derrick has been in a serious accident,‘“ he said.
