CASTRO VALLEY, Calif.—Burl Toler, the first African-American official in NFL history who went on to work one Super Bowl in a distinguished career, has died. He was 81. The University of San Francisco says Mr. Toler died Sunday. Mr. Toler was a star player on the Dons famous “Undefeated, Untied, Uninvited” 1951 football team that was denied a bowl bid despite a 9-0 record because it refused to leave its two black players behind.

2004 - In Athens, Greece, the U.S. men’s basketball team loses 92-73 to Puerto Rico, the third Olympic defeat for the Americans and first since adding pros. American teams had been 24-0 since the professional Olympic era began with the 1992 Dream Team. The U.S Olympic team’s record was 109-2, entering the game.

MONTREAL - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga upset Roger Federer in the Rogers Cup yesterday, coming back from the brink of elimination in the third set to beat the world’s top-ranked player 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-3). Once Federer got a game away from closing out the match, Tsonga broke his serve twice in front of a frenzied crowd at Uniprix Stadium. CARSON, Calif. - Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan has tested positive for what is believed to be swine flu, and his teammates are taking precautions. Donovan was to be evaluated by a doctor yesterday and today, the team said. His status for the Galaxy’s game against Seattle tonight remains unclear. Donovan did not practice yesterday after playing all 90 minutes for the United States in a 2-1 loss to Mexico in World Cup qualifying Wednesday in Mexico City. SI.com first reported his condition Thursday night.

Play will begin in 1960 with franchises in six cities with the probability of adding two more teams. 1977—Lanny Wadkins beats Gene Littler on the third hole of sudden death to take the PGA championship.

MASON, Ohio - When Venus Williams needed to make a shot, she couldn’t come close. Williams dumped routine shots into the net or hit them long throughout a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 loss to Italy’s Flavia Pennetta yesterday at the Cincinnati Open. CLEVELAND -Free agent Leon Powe signed a two-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, even though he isn’t expected back on the court until sometime around the all-star break. The Boston Celtics let the 6-8 forward leave following a third surgery on his left knee, this time to repair a torn ACL suffered in the playoffs. Powe averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 70 games last season. In other NBA news:

1937 - Shirley Hanover, driven by Henry Thomas, wins the Hambletonian Stakes in straight heats. 1942 - The Ambassador, driven by Ben White, wins the Hambletonian Stakes in the third heat. 1978 - Cold Comfort, driven by 23-year-old Peter Haughton, ties the International Trot mark of 2:31 3-5 at Roosevelt Raceway. Haughton is the youngest driver to win the International.

1975 - Jack Nicklaus wins the PGA Championship for the fourth time with a two-stroke victory over Bruce Crampton and Tom Weiskopf. 1980 - Jack Nicklaus wins his fifth PGA Championship with a record score of 274, seven strokes ahead of Andy Bean. 1996 - Cigar’s bid for a 17th straight victory ends when long shot Dare and Go passes the super horse in the upper stretch and pulls away to win the Pacific Classic at Del Mar. Cigar, 3½ lengths behind Dare and Go, fails to break a tie with Citation for the record winning streak by a North American-based horse this century.

The record time of 39.8 seconds lasts for 20 years. 1950 - Lusty Song, driven by Delvin Miller, wins the Hambletonian Stakes in straight heats over Star’s Pride. Lusty Song wins by a length in the first race and by a neck in the second.

Hanover Thomas A. Shepley has been hired as the director of the Pamunkey Regional Library, replacing Fran Freimarck, who retired this month after 32 years as director. Shepley is a library services administrator for Chesterfield County Public Library and has more than 13 years of experience in library systems in four states. His new duties begin Wednesday. The Pamunkey Regional Library has branches in Hanover, Goochland, King William and King and Queen counties.

Hill shoots a final-round 69 for 275 that gave her a three-stroke victory in the McCall’s LPGA Classic. Hill, who tied the tournament record of 13 under par, had made a tour-record 359 starts before tasting victory.

Chesterfield The Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension is accepting applications through Aug. 31 for its 2010 Master Gardener class. Trainees will receive 50 hours of horticultural training from extension agents, local specialists and advanced Master Gardeners. Classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m.-noon, during February and March. Previous knowledge or experience in gardening is preferred but not required. Upon completion of 50 hours of volunteer service, Master Gardener trainees will become certified Master Gardener volunteers and be presented certificates of recognition and identification badges. A youth soccer clinic will be held Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Atwater Soccer Complex, conducted by Wade Nye, Hopewell High School soccer coach. Another clinic, sponsored by the Hopewell Quarterback League, will take place Aug. 12-13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hopewell High School practice field.
