Bill Clinton, McAuliffe to speak in Richmond Monday morning
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe has released details of his scheduled appearances Monday in Richmond and Roanoke with former President Bill Clinton. At 9:30 a.m. Monday, Clinton and McAuliffe will speak in Richmond at the 17th Street Farmers’ Market, located at 17th and Franklin streets. At 12:15 p.m. Clinton and McAuliffe will speak in Roanoke at Fire Station No. 1, at 13 E. Church Ave. SE.

Leave the Driving
Roanoke’s school board has voted to privatize its transportation system. It will sell its bus fleet to Krapf Transportation Services. The Roanoke Times reports that drivers will get higher pay, but fewer hours and lower benefits. The school system expects to save about a quarter-million dollars a year. That is not a huge sum, though in times as tight as these every little bit helps. But Roanoke has another, even better reason to privatize: School officials will be able to concentrate on academics.

ROANOKE, Va. (AP)—Authorities in Roanoke County are investigating a crash in which four family members were killed.
The crash occurred Monday afternoon on Starkey Road, in the southwest Roanoke County.

Huckabee campaigns with McDonnell in Roanoke
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee campaigned with Virginia gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell in Roanoke yesterday, helping him raise $50,000 and praising him as the Republican who can help restore the party’s fortunes nationwide. Speaking to reporters, Huckabee, who lost to Arizona Sen. John McCain last year in his bid to win the Republican nomination for president, criticized those who say “that the Republican Party has sort of already experienced its demise and that the funeral services are being planned in the near future.“

Settlement is reached in riding mower death
The parents of a Botetourt County boy who died when he was run over by a riding lawnmower each will receive $380,398 from a jury award in their lawsuit against the manufacturer. An additional $760,797 will go into a trust fund for Ron and Kristie Simmons’ other son. The remainder will go to the family’s attorneys. Judge Clifford R. Weckstein of Roanoke Circuit Court signed an order Monday directing the distribution of the payout by MTD Products Inc. With interest, the $2 million award is now more than $2.5 million.

Peruvians find helping hands
This is a little story about big things happening to not-so-big people. The people are Liz Chiquillan, Piero Unzueta and Mayra Ramirez—19-year-old college students from Peru. If you were their parents, you’d be none too pleased to learn what happened to them after they flew to the United States in December. They were supposed to spend their three-month break from school working retail, perfecting their English and discovering a new part of the world, part of a work-experience exchange program for Latin American college students.

Sports car hits Roanoke house, killing driver
A 21-year-old man who had been driving with a suspended license died late Friday after police chased him and he slammed his sports car into a brick house in northeast Roanoke. Thomas Bennett, a Bedford County resident described by family members as a car enthusiast, died after a crash that occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on Fleming Avenue, a block from Plantation Road.

Hollins receives gift of $3 million
One of Hollins University’s biggest donors has come through with an additional $3 million. Frank and Jane Batten presented the gift last week to the university leadership program that bears the family name: the Batten Leadership Institute. The couple have given the university more than $6 million since 1995. Frank Batten Sr., 81, is the retired chairman and chief executive officer of the Norfolk-based Landmark Media Enterprises, which owns newspapers and other media properties. Landmark recently sold The Weather Channel to NBC Universal for $3.5 billion.
