2 convicted in Colonial Heights home invasion
A Colonial Heights jury has convicted two men in a violent attack in a home during which their five young victims were tied up naked on the floor with their heads or faces covered. Three were pistol-whipped or assaulted before being robbed. After a three-day trial that ended Wednesday in Colonial Heights Circuit Court, Daryl L. Sample, 22 of Hopewell and Ryan P. Wilson, 21, of Chesterfield County were convicted of a combined 17 felonies, including multiple counts of robbery and attempted robbery, burglary, conspiracy, use of firearm and wearing a mask in public. The jury recommended prison terms of 42 years for Sample and 37 years for Wilson.

Amelia County couple reunited with stolen dogs
Two small dogs stolen from an Amelia County couple whose home was ransacked by burglars Wednesday were found yesterday about a block away. John Puryear said he was informed by the sheriff’s department after a neighbor saw dogs that met the description of Nikki, a 3-year-old Yorkshire terrier, and Indy, a 7-year-old Maltese. “They’re cold and freezing, but we have them now,“ Puryear said.

Three charged in robberies in Fan, VCU area
Richmond police have several suspects in one set of robberies in the Fan District and neighborhoods around Virginia Commonwealth University, with three people in custody and two more possibly facing indictment on robbery charges next month. Police have charged two men from Henrico County and one from the city’s East End in six armed robberies in the Fan, Oregon Hill and Carver neighborhoods from late August through mid-September. They said two other suspects may have been involved in the robberies, which were carried out with a driver waiting nearby in a car.

Victim’s father witnesses aftermath of second crime
Michael Anthony Brewton stepped off the bus last night within a block from where his son was fatally stabbed two days before, only to stumble onto the aftermath of another violent crime. A few minutes before Brewton got off the bus in downtown Richmond, a 19-year-old man was punched and robbed shortly before 7 p.m. outside the old Central National Bank building at 219 E. Broad St. on the south side of Broad, police said.

Thieves steal jewelry worth $350,000 in Stony Point Shopping Center parking lot
Richmond police were working yesterday to solve a bold daylight robbery of an estimated $350,000 worth of merchandise that ranks among the largest jewelry heists in the city’s history. Police released few details about the incident Wednesday afternoon, but sources confirmed yesterday that three men converged on a New York jewelry distributor who was calling on Richmond-area jewelers, forced him face-down in a shopping-mall parking lot, and quickly made off with his jewelry merchandise.

Downtown Richmond coin dealer robbed
No injuries were reported in the armed robbery of a downtown Richmond coin dealer today. The robbery was reported shortly after noon at Modern Coin Inc. at 212 E. Grace St. Police said the suspects were described as two black males, both wearing dark clothing and red ski masks. One, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, was stocky and was carrying a gun, and the other, about 5 feet, 11 inches tall, had a slim build.

No injuries in armed robbery on VCU campus
No injuries were reported this morning in an armed robbery that occurred on Virginia Commonwealth University’s main academic campus. Two young men told Richmond police they were sitting on a wall in the 700 block of West Franklin Street, opposite the north side of Monroe Park, when they were confronted at 12:30 a.m. by two unknown males who first asked for a light. One of the suspects then pulled a handgun and demanded money.

Fan resident robbed at gunpoint
A man was robbed at gunpoint in an alley behind his Fan District home last night. The man told Richmond police he was getting out of his car behind his home in the 1600 block of West Grace Street when he was confronted by two suspects, one of whom had a gun. The suspects instructed him to put his wallet in a bag they were carrying, and when he complied, they ran.
Three juveniles robbed in Richmond
Three juveniles ages 11 to 13 were the victims of separate robberies during a 20-hour span in the city of Richmond. Two of the victims were slightly injured when they were struck in the head by robbers, police said. In all three cases, the robbers—like their victims—were believed to be juveniles. Two arrests were made. Though Richmond police do not have statistics on the number of juvenile crime victims readily available, Capt. David L. Martin said it’s a more common occurrence than some might think.

No injuries in Fan District armed robbery
A man was robbed in Richmond’s Fan District last night but was uninjured. The man told police he was approached about 9:55 p.m. in the 2100 block of Grove Avenue by two males—one with a handgun, the other with a knife, Capt. Dave Martin said. One of the robbers told the victim to give them everything, and he surrendered a wallet, cell phone and iPod before complying with their demand that he run from the scene, Martin said.

Police arrest 2, seek 1 in Richmond bank robbery
Richmond police arrested two males and were looking for a third after authorities said the trio robbed a West Broad Street bank and then crashed into a house while trying to escape. The incident began about 2:33 p.m. yesterday after police responded to a report of a robbery at the M&T Bank at 3124 W. Broad St., police spokesman Gene Lepley said.

Richmond man arrested in killing of delivery driver
Authorities charged an 18-year-old Richmond man in the slaying of a Chinese-food deliveryman whose identity is still a mystery a month and a half after his death. Tobias J. Young of the 1000 block of North 21st Street was arrested Wednesday night. He is charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the July 27 shooting at the Whitcomb Court public-housing complex.

Food-delivery drivers targeted by robbers in Richmond, Chesterfield
One of two Chinese-food delivery drivers robbed Monday in the Richmond area recounted his story yesterday. Jack Chen was robbed in North Richmond about an hour and a half before a driver from another restaurant was assaulted and robbed outside a church in Chesterfield County. Theirs were at least the third and fourth robbery incidents involving Chinese-food delivery drivers in the Richmond area in less than five months. The two earlier victims were killed.

Robberies prompt VCU warning
Virginia Commonwealth University issued a warning to its students and staff after two robberies occurred in two days near the downtown Richmond school’s main academic campus. Police have stepped up their presence on and around VCU properties in response to the robberies, John M. Bennett, senior vice president for finance and administration, said in a letter to the university community.

Two VCU students robbed at gunpoint
Two Virginia Commonwealth University students were robbed at gunpoint Wednesday night near the southern edge of the downtown Richmond school’s main academic campus. No injuries were reported in the robbery, which occurred at 10:15 p.m. in the 800 block of West Cumberland Street. Richmond police Capt. Scott Booth said the students, ages 21 and 22, were walking along Cumberland when they were confronted by two males, both carrying firearms.
