Putting his best foot forward
Ronnie Black started off on the right foot on his high jump attempts this season at Virginia Commonwealth University. An ankle injury showed that he really was getting off on the wrong foot. The 6-4½ rising sophomore is scheduled to compete in the USA Junior National Track and Field championships this weekend in Eugene, Ore. He’ll be jumping off his left—and more natural—foot while trying to exceed the 6-10¾ mark he cleared during the season.

VCU notes
Ronnie Black figures he will need to join the “7-foot club” to have a chance at winning the high jump in next week’s USA Junior National Track and Field championships in Eugene, Ore. Black, who turns 19 in August, qualified for the event by clearing 6-10¾ in his freshman season with VCU. “If I hit 7 feet on my first attempt, I think I’ll be set for the top four,“ he said.

Final-round surge lifts VCU golf team to title
Postseason hopes for Virginia Commonwealth’s golf team came down to the last round at this weekend’s Colonial Athletic Association tournament at the Callaway Gardens course in Pine Mountain, Ga. The Rams, sitting on the bubble for the NCAA tournament, were tied for third place, 12 shots behind Georgia State. VCU coach Matt Ball figured his team couldn’t finish lower than second and make the NCAA tournament field as an at-large entry.
