Sentencing delayed in Ryan Matko slaying  11/20/09 12:01 AM

Next week’s scheduled sentencing of former gang member Detavis J. King for the 2007 slaying of Chesterfield County teenager Ryan Matko will be delayed for several months as his defense attorney seeks to have King’s guilty verdicts set aside. Defense lawyer Greg Sheldon filed a motion Wednesday to continue Monday’s sentencing hearing so he can obtain and review a transcript of the testimony given by Dominique Johnson, a key prosecution witness, who Sheldon suggested at King’s trial was the real killer.

Man found fatally shot in Petersburg is identified  11/13/09 12:01 AM

A man found fatally shot in Petersburg on Wednesday has been identified as Harry Stevenson, 25, who had been staying with friends in Richmond, police said. Petersburg authorities said Stevenson and another man, Shamondray Chavis, 20, of the 600 block of South Jefferson Street in Petersburg, were shot early Wednesday as they were attempting to break into a home in the 700 block of Ramsom Street about 7:30 a.m.

An 11-year-old Richmond boy who allegedly shot and killed his 5-year-old niece took the stand yesterday in his mother’s felony child-neglect trial. The boy, who was 10 at the time of the Aug. 12, 2008, fatal shooting of Dominique Carter, spoke so softly while fidgeting in the witness box that he had to be asked repeatedly by Circuit Judge Richard D. Taylor Jr. to talk clearly and into the microphone.

Petersburg police investigate fatal shooting  11/11/09 12:26 PM

Petersburg police are investigating the shooting death of a man who was discovered about 9:30 this morning in the 600 block of Harrison Street. Details were not immediately available. Police also reported that another person suffering from a gunshot wound arrived at Southside Regional Medical Center about 7:40 a.m. Esther Hyatt, a police spokeswoman, said she had no immediate information about whether the two shootings are related.

Suspect in 4 N.C. slayings arrested at motel in Henry  11/04/09 12:01 AM

A man suspected of fatally shooting four men in the parking lot of a North Carolina television shop was arrested early Monday in Virginia, police said. Police in Mount Airy, N.C., said Marcos Chavez Gonzalez was arrested without incident at a motel in Henry County, about 50 miles northeast of Mount Airy near the state line. He was charged with four counts of murder.

Suspect surrenders in Prince George slaying  10/27/09 12:01 AM

A Hopewell man surrendered to police yesterday in Friday’s fatal shooting of an acquaintance in Prince George County. Robert Edward Moore, 30, turned himself in about 11:15 a.m. and was charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of William Joseph Miller Jr., 39, who was found shot to death in the driveway of his sister’s home in the 3700 block of Prince George Drive. Moore also was charged with using a firearm in the commission of murder.

A Chesterfield County man who police say shot his wife Sunday before turning the gun on himself has died. Marshall E. Johnson, 62, was pronounced dead Sunday evening at VCU Medical Center. His wife, Lisette D. Johnson, was listed in critical but stable condition last night, a hospital spokeswoman said. Barring any unforeseen medical complications, Lisette Johnson should make a recovery, said Chesterfield police Capt. Terry Patterson. Her surgery was successful, he said.

Chesterfield man dies in domestic-related shooting  10/05/09 9:58 AM

A Chesterfield County man who shot his wife before turning the gun on himself has died of his wounds, police said this morning. Marshall E. Johnson, 62, died at VCU Medical Center. His wife, Lisette D. Johnson, remained in serious condition, police said. The shooting, which police described as domestic in nature, occurred about 1:30 p.m. Sunday inside the couple’s home in the 10800 block of Hinshaw Drive off Huguenot Road. Two children were inside at the time.

Woman, boy shot in South Richmond  09/29/09 12:01 AM

A woman and a boy were taken to a hospital for treatment after being struck with birdshot in a shooting Sunday in South Richmond. Richmond police Capt. Scott Booth said neither victim was believed to have life-threatening injuries. The victims, who were taken to CJW Medical Center (Chippenham), both were struck in the legs, and the woman was hit in one arm as well, Booth said.

The man accused of shooting him isn’t going anywhere in the near future. “He’s just thankful that he’s alive,“ the victim’s father said of his son, who returned to classes Monday using crutches to hobble around campus.

Chesterfield gunman shot by police dies  09/02/09 12:01 AM

A Chesterfield County man died yesterday after he was wounded Monday in an exchange of gunfire with a county SWAT team, marking the second fatal shooting by Chesterfield police in recent months. Police shot Brett M. Rivers after he emerged from his residence at The Park at Salisbury apartments and opened fire on SWAT team members Monday night, ending a 2½-hour standoff, police said.
