Film review: ‘Watchmen’ winds down slowly

The most unintentionally hilarious moment in “Watchmen”? There are so many to choose from, so very many.  But it would have to be the love scene played out on a desert planet at sundown, the two naked lovers standing and kissing in front of a nuclear explosion and mushroom cloud.

‘I’ve Loved You So Long’ artfully evokes emotion  02/26/09 12:01 AM

Film review: Loving the human “I’ve Loved You So Long”    When we first see Kristin Scott Thomas in “I’ve Loved You So Long,“ she is bone-weary and emotionally damaged.  In movies, there are only two directions a character like that can take. Either she will work her way through her problems and find a form of redemption, or her situation will deteriorate further until it becomes intolerable.

Timing is just right for ‘The International’  02/12/09 12:01 AM

The timing couldn’t be better.  The script to “The International” was probably written three or four years ago or more. At the time, the writer chose for his villain a symbol of heartless greed: a giant bank.  Back then, banks were flying high, and using one as a villain might have seemed a risky move. But now, everyone hates banks.

Richly detailed, ‘The Wrestler’ is captivating  01/22/09 12:01 AM

In pro wrestling, the fights are staged, but the pain is real.  Darren Aronofsky’s extraordinary “The Wrestler” begins with the story of a past-his-prime wrestler and takes it to stunning new heights.  The revelation here is Mickey Rourke, finally cashing in on that promise he flashed so long ago and then squandered. As Randy “The Ram,“ he gives a searing portrait of a man who, having once known great fame, is now unable to give up the hope of finding it again.

‘Earth’ offers big bang, but the ending is a bust  12/13/08 12:01 AM

A headline in “The Day the Earth Stood Still” indicates the world is about to end not with a whimper but a bang. The opposite, alas, is true of the movie, a remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic. The film is great, truly great, for almost all of its entire length. It’s all bang.

‘Australia’: Giddyap for long slog  11/27/08 12:01 AM

‘Australia’: Giddyap for long slog

Presumably, Baz Luhrmann could not decide whether to make an old-fashioned Western or a war film.  Hey, he must have said, let’s do both! And let’s throw in a little “Wizard of Oz,“ too!  The unhappy result, “Australia,“ feels exactly like an old-fashioned Western with a war film tacked on at the end.
