Richmond Marathon not participating in tough ecomomic times
Tough economic conditions seem not to have affected the SunTrust Richmond Marathon. Race officials say record participation is possible in the 26.2-mile marathon and the 13.1-mile McDonald’s Half Marathon despite a nationwide recession that has chilled sports from NASCAR to high school. The existing records: 5,109 for the marathon, set in 2007; 4,616 for the half marathon, set last year.

Richmond boy with heart defect to join in bike ride to benefit VCU center
Eight-year-old Peter Staropoli will join local cyclists in a 17-mile bike ride tonight. He is well-aware he may not get to the finish line, but for the Richmond boy this ride is a significant accomplishment. Peter, an energetic child with a profound curiosity for weapons and the U.S. military, was diagnosed with a rare heart defect when he was 8 months old. Since then, he has had five surgeries and six cardiac catheterizations.

Anthem Stride Through Time
Downtown Richmond is teeming with a history that can serve as a microcosm for America’s own past. It’s a history that ranges from before the Revolutionary War to the roots of the civil-rights movement in Jackson Ward to the more recent slavery reconciliation. It’s all there, as well as everything in between, in a 6.2-mile loop that during rush hour becomes easily unnoticed.

Week in Review
WEEK’S END The most important piece of information in yesterday’s front-page headline, “2 in Va. Had Swine Flu,“ might be the tense. The campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination has grown testy. References to Global Crossing clearly get under Terry McAuliffe’s skin. Expect more. “Tra la! It’s May! The lusty month of May,“ sings Guenevere in “Camelot.“ May also means the The Valentine Richmond History Center has begun accepting nominations for Richmond’s History Makers. The recognition goes to individuals or organizations who have made a mark. A nominee’s name does not have to be William Byrd to win. Contact http://www.richmondhistorymakers.com for details.
