OUTDOORS COLUMN: Elevate your opinion of flying squirrels
I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. In October, I made the case for “Flatheads” as the name for the Richmond’s new minor-league baseball team. Some would say it was a compelling one. A tidal wave of e-mails lauded my vision of kids in catfishheads waving foam-fish fingers chanting “Flatheads. Flatheads. Flatheads.“ “Flatheads” was fun, it was outdoorsy, it was local, but it wasn’t to be. Somehow it failed to convince the only people that mattered: the owners and operators of Richmond Professional Baseball. That’s OK. I’m not bitter. I’ll attend my share of games this year regardless.

Cardinal rule of winter
Business is booming at the 17 bird feeders in the backyard of Amber Kimmich’s Powhatan County home. Colorful nonmigratory birds such as purple finches, cardinals and downy woodpeckers flock around the thistle holders, tray feeders and tubes. “Birds lose 50 percent of their body fat during the winter trying to stay warm,“ said Kimmich, a volunteer for the Area Rehabbers Klub, a Powhatan-based group that cares for sick or injured wildlife. “That’s why it’s so important” that homeowners keep feeding birds during cold months.
