Boys choir, St. Andrew’s concert to benefit food bank
The Richmond Boys Choir and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church are helping to replenish the Central Virginia Foodbank. The Boys Choir will perform a holiday concert at 7 p.m. Friday Dec. 19, 2008, at the church, 236 S. Laurel St. The cost of admission: a canned good or other nonperishable food item. “Across the state, food banks are running bare at a time when more people than ever are going to need help,“ said the Rev. Abbott Bailey, St. Andrew’s rector. “We can’t do enough to keep the shelves full.“
Saints’ James a shot-putter and violinist
Alex James has tossed the shot put more than 51 feet. Glancing at powerfully-built Alex James, people guess the St. Christopher’s senior plays football. He doesn’t. Folks might never suspect he’s an accomplished violinist and chess-team president. He is. So much for judging a book by the cover. “I know I surprise people,“ the 6-3 240-pounder said.

A helpful hand in choosing a college
Any parent who has ever helped a child try to work through the college application process would love what St. Gertrude High School is offering. In a word, ease. The school is participating in an online program that helps students, parents and school personnel track grades, test scores and likely college choices. And because the Family Connections feature of the Naviance program can be programmed with real-life data - at St. Gertrude, the guidance staff has input five years worth of student performance results - the information it creates hits close to home because it’s from home.

Woman reaches ‘last resort’ of weight loss
Since suffering a heart attack two years ago, Queenie Riley has been trying to lose weight. By exercising and eating two meals a day plus a Slim Fast drink for breakfast, she managed to lose 51 pounds, getting down to 299.
