Baseball notes: Holliday, Cardinals finalize contract  01/08/10 12:01 AM

The sides reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday that was subject to a physical, and they held a news conference yesterday. Cust is likely to be the club’s primary designated hitter this season. General Manager Billy Beane has been committed to upgrading Oakland’s offense this winter. RANGERS: Texas has signed free agent infielder Matt Brown to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. Brown, primarily a third baseman, appeared in 15 games total in 2007 and 2008 for the Los Angeles Angels, his only major-league appearance in his nine professional seasons.

Reporter and editor Marcia Greene dies at 57  01/07/10 12:01 AM

Marcia Anita Slacum Greene, a newspaper reporter and editor who once wrote that she wanted to “understand and present the often hidden, sometimes ignored dimensions of the poor, of children at risk and of those who have no American dreams,“ died Monday at her Washington home. The 57-year-old Baltimore native, who retired in July 2009 as city editor at The Washington Post, succumbed to complications of pancreatic cancer.

NHL notes: Murray dismissed as Blues’ coach  01/03/10 12:01 AM

ST. LOUIS—The worst home record in the NHL led to the end of Andy Murray’s tenure as St. Louis Blues coach. The franchise replaced Murray, 58, yesterday, hoping a younger man can better motivate a youthful roster that’s underachieved. Davis Payne, coach of the Blues’ AHL affiliate in Peoria, was appointed interim coach and was on the bench for St. Louis’ home game against Chicago last night.

Sense of community makes Richmond area special  12/28/09 12:01 AM

What a difference 100 miles makes. That is about the distance between Northern Virginia, my home for 28 years, and Richmond, a community I joined just eight months ago. Many of the differences between the two areas are obvious—traffic and cost of living perhaps having the most impact. But here in Richmond, I found one difference that has been particularly palpable, and in a very short time it has made a huge difference in my life. It is sense of community.
