Women’s basketball: Moss leads VCU to overtime win  11/22/09 12:01 AM

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.—D’Andra Moss scored 33 points and brought down 10 rebounds as VCU defeated Morgan State 75-68 in double overtime. Knotted up at 56 apiece, the game went into overtime. Still tied at 63 after the first overtime, it wasn’t until the second overtime that VCU outscored Morgan State 12-5 to claim the victory. La’Tavia Rorie added 11 points for the undefeated Rams. Corin Adams scored 22 points for Morgan State.

George Mason falls in tourney  11/21/09 12:01 AM

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico—Gani Lawal had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Georgia Tech over George Mason 70-62 yesterday in the consolation round of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Lawal scored six of his team’s last 15 points as the Yellow Jackets (2-1) held off a late rally by the Patriots. Derrick Favors scored 18 points for Georgia Tech. He had six points in a 13-0 run that gave the Yellow Jackets a 43-23 lead with 15 minutes to play.

Biggs powers Hokies to win  11/20/09 12:01 AM

BLACKSBURG—Lindsay Biggs recorded 18 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Virginia Tech to a 70-41 victory over George Mason last night. Utahya Drye registered a double-double for the Hokies, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 boards. Nikki Davis and Abby Redick added seven points apiece. Ashleigh Braxton had 11 points and five rebounds for the Patriots, Brittany Eley added 10 points and three steals and Angelee LaTouche grabbed nine boards.

CHARLOTTESVILLE—Chelsea Shine had a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 12 Virginia to a 110-63 victory over South Carolina Upstate last night. The sophomore forward, celebrating her 20th birthday, shot 10 for 13 from the field. Monica Wright and Simone Egwu added 19 points each to help the Cavaliers (3-0) to their highest scoring output in nine years.

Duo powers Radford to win  11/18/09 12:01 AM

RADFORD - Art Parakhouski and Joey Lynch-Flohr each had double-doubles for the fourth consecutive game to lead Radford to a 94-70 victory over Lynchburg last night. Parakhouski scored 31 points and had 17 rebounds, and Lynch-Flohr added 21 points and 12 rebounds, giving the duo double-doubles dating back to Radford’s win over VMI in the Big South tournament championship game last March.

Dukes make use of turnovers for win  11/15/09 12:01 AM

AMHERST, Mass.—Jamaris Sanders returned a fumble 38-yards for seven of James Madison’s 10 points off turnovers in a 17-14 win over Massachusetts yesterday. Sanders stripped the ball from Massachusetts’ Tony Nelson to give the Dukes (3-4 CAA, 5-5) a 10-0 lead with 1:59 left in the first quarter. Scott Noble had a career-high 105 yards on 29 carries in the Dukes first win at Massachusetts since 1987.

FCS roundup: Marriner lifts Tribe to victory  11/01/09 12:01 AM

KINGSTON, R.I.—Courtland Marriner rushed for three touchdowns and William & Mary beat Rhode Island 39-14 yesterday. Marriner had 93 yards rushing and scored on runs of 9, 16 and 39 yards for the Tribe (4-1 CAA, 7-1). After the Rams (0-5, 1-7) took a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard pass from Chris Paul-Etienne to Shawn Leonard, the Tribe scored 39 unanswered points. In addition to Marriner’s three touchdowns, the Tribe got an 18-yard touchdown run from Terrence Riggins.
