Is Shockoe Bottom The Best Place for a New Ballpark?  05/17/09 12:01 AM

Is Shockoe Bottom The Best Place for a New Ballpark?

On Tuesday night, The Times-Dispatch held its 24th Public Square, at its downtown offices. The forum began with a four-person debate between supporters and opponents of building a new minor-league baseball stadium in Shockoe Bottom, followed by comments and questions from the audience. Publisher Tom Silvestri moderated. Below is an edited transcript of the conversation. To watch the entire Public Square online, go to Timesdispatch.com, key word: Public Square.

Dealer Plan Will Kill Jobs  05/17/09 12:01 AM

President Obama’s auto task force plans to put 150,000 Americans out of work and will gain nothing by doing so. The task force has proposed eliminating many auto dealerships, an act that will result in the loss of more than 150,000 jobs nationwide. These aren’t just sales jobs: Virginia will lose service, clerical, and administrative jobs as well. And even more jobs will be lost in the many small businesses in local communities that support these dealerships.

Pride and Progress In Iraq  05/17/09 12:01 AM

As a local family practice doctor and a U.S. Army Reserve medical officer, I would like to give a report on the good job our soldiers have done in Iraq. It was obvious that significant change had occurred between the time I left Iraq in June 2007 and when I returned for my second deployment in October 2008. When I left in 2007, the 32 beds of the Combat Support Hospital (CSH) were filled with injured American soldiers, Iraqi soldiers, Iraqi police, and civilians—including children. When I returned to Iraq in October 2008, all the beds of the hospital were empty except one.

The Marines Who Make Marines  05/17/09 12:01 AM

In a recent column, I attempted to relate a little of what happens during a Marine recruit’s transformation from civilian to warrior at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island. Since then, I have heard from many former and current Marines who remembered well their time on that island. In what may seem a baffling paradox, just about everyone recalled those seemingly endless weeks of hardship and misery with genuine fondness.

Students Honor Oliver Hill’s Legacy  05/10/09 12:01 AM

Students in the Richmond Public Schools were given the opportunity recently to participate in the Oliver Hill Essay Contest. The essays were judged by Shameka Hall of the Office of the Public Defender and Jennie Sublett of the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. “We were looking for people who went beyond providing a history lesson to really analyzing the ways in which Oliver Hill and other leaders of the Civil Rights Movement contributed to the election of Barack Obama, which signified the fruition of the dreams of millions of American citizens,“ Sublett said. “We were particularly impressed by those essays that recognized the incredible opportunities that are open to the youth of today that were only made available through the efforts of leaders like Oliver Hill.“

Creigh Deeds makes his case  05/10/09 12:01 AM

All across our commonwealth, hard-working families are struggling to make ends meet. We all have friends and neighbors who have lost their job, seen their hours cut back, or watched their college or retirement savings disappear. A financial meltdown, coupled with tightening credit and soaring unemployment rates, has left the middle class in a crisis of confidence.

Terry McAuliffe makes his case  05/10/09 12:01 AM

Across the commonwealth, folks are worried about jobs, about our energy future, about the quality of their children’s education, and the value of their homes. We’ve been lucky here in Virginia—we’ve had two great governors in Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and they have worked hard to put Virginia in a place to weather the economic downturn much better than other states. But our next governor is still going to have some serious economic challenges to address, and that’s why I’m running for governor: I believe I have the right experience and the best vision to get our economy moving again.

Brian Moran makes his case  05/10/09 12:01 AM

I am running for governor because in these difficult times, Virginians need a fighter in the governor’s office who has the record and the compassion to put Virginia’s families first. Today, Virginia’s families are hurting: 300,000 have lost their jobs, thousands have lost their homes to foreclosure, and hundreds of thousands more worry they will be laid off or unable to make their mortgage payment. I have seen their faces and heard their stories. These are the Virginians I will wake up to fight for every single day.

Business Community Must Support Nonprofit Organizations  05/10/09 12:01 AM

In November 2008, when Wall Street and the economy were hitting new lows, our firm, Goodman & Co., announced that it was giving away $300,000. Now, that sounds either terrifically kind hearted or a little crazy. Making it even more puzzling is the fact that Goodman & Co. is a CPA firm. We obsess over every penny—where it’s spent and how it’s recorded.

Drilling Down Into the President’s Energy Plans  05/03/09 12:01 AM

On this Earth Day, it is time for us to lay a new foundation for economic growth by beginning a new era of energy exploration in America. The choice we face is not between saving our environment and saving our economy—it’s a choice between prosperity and decline. Perhaps not, but until recently there has been a strong correlation between energy consumption and economic growth. See http://www.pewclimate.org/global-warming-basics/facts_and_figures/ fig18.cfm.

Teaching Corps Values

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. Hilton Head Island is famous for its 12-mile stretch of beautiful sand beaches. The barrier island, located just off the coast of South Carolina’s Low Country, is an upscale vacation spot where the well-heeled go to rest and re cuperate. Few people realize that little more than a stone’s throw away from the trendy shops and fabulous golf courses of this resort is another, smaller island. The views of water and beaches are every bit as beautiful as on Hilton Head, but there is precious little rest or recuperating done here.

Kaine’s Trip to Morocco Adds Strength to an Old Alliance  05/03/09 12:01 AM

After Israel and Dubai, Gov. Tim Kaine and First Lady Anne Holton visited Rabat, Morocco, as guests of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This was a historic visit by the governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia to a country in North Africa that played an important role early in our history, when—as a brand new, independent United States of America—we had a few friends and countless enemies.

Political Dispatches: Sen. Snacks Finds a Sweet Spot  04/26/09 12:01 AM

Bill Bolling may prove Woody Allen’s axiom: “Ninety percent of life is just showing up.“ As a lieutenant governor running for re-election, Bolling may be in the best position of any of his ticket mates to win in November. That’s because the Republican hasn’t given voters a reason to fire him.

The American Food System Is Enough to Make You Sick  04/26/09 12:01 AM

It’s not up to FDA food safety director Stephen F. Sundlof to tell me whether we should reorganize the whole U.S. food and agriculture system. But his video—on the agency’s salmonella-and-peanuts Web site—does pose the right question: “Well, a lot of people are asking me lately, what’s safe to eat and what isn’t safe to eat?“

Conservation Easements Protect Open Land  04/26/09 12:01 AM

Conservation easements are increasingly being seen as the most reliably successful means of preserving Virginia’s vanishing family farms and other open-space private lands. Conservation easements are partial interests in land by which a landowner conveys to a charity or government agency the right to restrict the use and development of his property, usually in perpetuity. Title and all other rights in the property—rights to sell, gift, bequeath—remain with the landowner, as does the right to use the land in any way that doesn’t harm its recognized conservation values.
