If you’re looking to grab a slice of pizza and still make the movie on time, the renamed A Slice of Grapevine, next to Regal Cinemas in Short Pump, can make your life a little easier. The restaurant (11636 W. Broad St.) is still run by the Trak family, but now, in addition to table service, a “slice counter” is available for quicker meals.

The former Pizza Hut at Grace and Laurel streets will be reincarnated next year as a Chipotle. A new shopping center called Grace & Laurel Commons is expected to open in March; plans also call for a Panera and a two-story location of The Pizza Place, which currently exists at 18th and Main streets. . . .

The area’s infatuation with wine bars continues with the expected opening of two new chill-out spots early next week. Ned Wheeler, co-owner of Short Pump’s Barrel Thief, is hopeful that a second location of the wine shop and café at Patterson and Libbie avenues will open its retail area on Monday and, pending ABC approval, the food and drink side on Tuesday.

For the past six weeks, Bill Cabaniss has enjoyed tweaking what he calls his “own little dog and pony show.“ He’s referring to Rivers Ridge, the longtime home of Grafiti Grille that in October reopened as Cabaniss’ new venture. The restaurant, at 403 N. Ridge Road, was gutted and took almost five months to renovate. Now, new lighting and plenty of mahogany accent the American bistro, which is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (but closed for a break between lunch and dinner)

The concept of organic pizza sounds like an oxymoron, but the folks at Pizza Fusion are dedicated to offering a different type of pie. Slated to open next month in Short Pump Station (home to Trader Joe’s and Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches), the Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Pizza Fusion boasts of using all-natural ingredients, including organic vegetables, cheese and flour, on its oval-shaped pizzas.

City Dogs, the specialty hot dog restaurant at 1316 E. Cary St. that opened about two months ago, is observing the kickoff of NFL season with a hot dog eating contest Sept. 4.
