Sharapova sharp in Open return
NEW YORK - Maria Sharapova couldn’t bear the thought of a U.S. Open taking place without her. So while sidelined with a torn shoulder a year ago, she refused to follow the tournament on TV. She basically pretended it wasn’t happening. Last night, Sharapova was right where she likes to be: on the Grand Slam stage. The 2006 U.S. Open champion returned to the tournament with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Tsvetana Pironkova.

PAUL WOODY COLUMN: Olympic golf a bogey
Sorry, golf is not an Olympic sport. Any sport that has its own channel, has a country club aura and is on television almost every weekend does not fit the description of an Olympic sport. Badminton, now there’s an Olympic sport. Tomorrow, the International Olympic Committee will announce the two sports it will add for the 2016 Summer Games.

The Greatest?
Last weekend Roger Federer won the men’s title at Wimbledon. His victory moved him past Pete Sampras in all-time wins in “grand slam” tournaments. Does that make him the greatest male tennis player ever? Maybe. Maybe not. For many years professionals could not play in the four tournaments composing the grand slam. The tourneys at Wimbledon and Forest Hills, for instance, were for amateurs only. When excellent competitors such as Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, and Ken Rosewall went pro, they no longer qualified for the grand slams. There is no telling how many slams certain players would have won if they had not turned professional, often during the peaks of their careers.

The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., siblings, who have taken home seven of the past nine Wimbledon championships, are one round from another meeting.
