Central Region wash out
VIRGINIA BEACH - Rain fell on Thomas Dale’s parade in the opening quarterfinal of the Virginia High School League Group AAA field hockey tournament yesterday at the U.S. National Training Center. Then, a deluge stopped the Maggie Walker Governor’s School-Lake Braddock game in the first half of the second quarterfinal. “It was pouring so hard we had a delay in the game. There was at least an inch of water on the turf,“ Maggie Walker coach Paige Hawkins said. “Seriously, the ball would not move there was so much water.“
Knights, Wildcats put it all on line
Thomas Dale’s players filed off the court quickly, expressing frustration at not being able to play as well as they would have liked.

Knights tackle higher level
Coming into this season, the Thomas Dale field hockey team wore the mantle of two-time defending Central Region champion. The Knights had a 40-4 overall record in the two-year span. Five seniors, who played key roles in Thomas Dale’s success, graduated, but the Knights have overcome some tough odds to compile a 19-0 record and win a third consecutive region championship.
Hevener a lengthy net gain
Wounded by graduation, Thomas Dale High School boys volleyball coach Mike Walker was in dire need of a tall, springy middle blocker to defend his state Group AAA title.

Thomas Dale pulled away in the second half to defeat James River 3-1 in the Central Region semifinals yesterday at Cosby.

The first time the Thomas Dale and Deep Run boys volleyball teams played this season, Thomas Dale dispatched the visiting Wildcats three sets to none in little more than hour.

Saints earn tennis title
CHARLOTTESVILLE - St. Catherine’s took home the LIS Division I girls tennis title for the second consecutive year and finished out the season undefeated in the conference both this year and last. No. 1 singles player Callie Whitlock, No. 2 singles Anne Garland and No. 4 singles Allie Gullquist were all undefeated in each of their matches this season, and Whitlock and Garland were unbeaten in doubles.
