3 die in weather-related traffic crashes today in Virginia
Three people died today in weather-related crashes across Virginia, state police said this afternoon. The first wreck about 4:35 a.m. after a driver whose pickup truck collided with a fallen tree was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on state Route 56 in Nelson County. Alger H. Fleming, 66, of Amherst was killed after he left his vehicle to inspect his damaged pickup. Police said he was struck by an eastbound tractor-trailer that swerved to avoid hitting Fleming’s pickup about 1.8 miles west of state Route 655. No charges will be filed, police said.

Two Va. wrecks result in double fatalities
Two traffic crashes with double fatalities during the weekend boosted the state’s highway death toll to 412, compared with 480 a year ago yesterday. Virginia State Police said an Appomattox County crash yesterday took the life of 85-year-old Winston Buford Davis of Ford. He died about an hour after a 5:58 a.m. crash that saw his eastbound vehicle leave U.S. 460 and overturn about a half-mile east of state Route 707. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Three Virginians die in crashes
Three Virginians were killed in early-morning crashes this weekend. A 31-year-old Louisa County man was killed in a single-vehicle wreck in Chesterfield County yesterday morning. Chesterfield County police said James A. Beasley III of the 5500 block of Parrish Road in Louisa was traveling northeast in the 4900 block of Beulah Road about 2:05 a.m. when he lost control of his car and hit a tree.

Wrecks on Virginia roads kill eight
The death Wednesday of a man injured May 13 in a two-vehicle crash in Henry County has raised the 2009 state highway death toll to 252. That is 50 fewer than the total at this time last year. Johnny O. Bond, 80, of Mayodan, N.C., was a passenger in a car that was leaving a business when it was struck by another car on U.S. 220, police said. He was wearing a seat belt, police said.

At least five die on state roads
4 Virginians among 5 killed on state roads At least five people were killed on Virginia roads Friday and yesterday, state police said. An 87-year-old man was involved in a two-car crash in Bedford on Friday morning. Sidney Jerome Rosenbaum of Bedford was driving a car north on U.S. 221 when it ran off the right shoulder and Rosenbaum lost control. The car came back onto the road, crossed the center line and hit a second car head-on at 9:24 a.m.

Three die in Virginia traffic crashes
A Woodbridge man died after a motorcycle wreck on Friday. Jason Lee Wright, 32, was traveling south on Springwoods Drive at Bracknell Drive in Prince William County when the motorcycle struck the concrete median on the left side of the lane at 10:30 p.m. Wright died at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge less than an hour later. On Thursday, two people died on Virginia roads.

Wrecks kill three on Virginia roads
A truck driver was killed Tuesday in a crash involving two tractor-trailers in Carroll County. Sabato Lettieri, 54, of Bellerose Terrace, N.Y., was driving a tractor-trailer southbound on Interstate 77, 1.5 miles south of state Route 69, when a tractor-trailer travelling in the opposite direction went through the guardrail and hit Lettieri’s vehicle head-on at 11:20 a.m.

Crashes in Norfolk claim two lives
Two people were killed in separate crashes in Norfolk on Tuesday, Virginia State Police said. Carl A. Gary, 32, of Norfolk was a passenger in a car that was southbound on Tidewater Drive when, at Thole Street, it collided with a car making a left turn from the opposite direction at 8:15 a.m., police said. Gary, who police said was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

Smyth crash kills 4-year-old child
A 4-year-old Southwest Virginia child was killed yesterday in a two-vehicle crash in Smyth County, according to Virginia State Police. Anthony Plummer of Chilhowie died at the scene of the crash that occurred on state Route 762 near its intersection with Route 739. The child was riding in a pickup truck that crossed the road’s center line and struck an SUV head-on. The child was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Highway wrecks fatal to 9 in Va.
Two Louisa County residents were among nine people who died in traffic crashes during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, Virginia State Police said yesterday. Kenneth M. Sharpe, 31, died Saturday when his sport utility vehicle veered off the road on a curve, struck an embankment and rolled six times on state Route 22, about 2 miles west of U.S. 15 in Louisa County. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, police said. He died at the scene at 10:55 p.m.
