CarMax Summer League gives 17-and-unders, community, nice shot  07/06/09 12:01 AM

Breezes affect jump shots. Rain stops games. Otherwise, the CarMax Summer Basketball League for 17-and-under boys and girls at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center on Old Brook Road closely resembles in-season hoops. Observers of all ages occupy the bleachers and lawn chairs, or just stand and watch, as some of the area’s finest players in high school, middle school and elementary school go at it under the lights in intense games with experienced officials.

John Marshall’s Travis McKie is a rare two-year attendee at the NBPA’s Top 100 camp. CHARLOTTESVILLE—Nearly 30 years have passed since a 6-11 kid from Clarkston, Mich., traveled to Oakland, Calif., to play in the McDonald’s All-American basketball game. Tim McCormick still recalls the shock of his first practice there. “That was the first time I’d ever played against anybody that was as tall as me,“ McCormick said Wednesday at John Paul Jones Arena.

Travis McKie chooses Wake Forest  04/22/09 5:54 PM

All-Metro boys basketball player of the year Travis McKie today verbally committed to play at Wake Forest. McKie, a rising senior at John Marshall High School, averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Justices. McKie is a 6-6 wing/power forward.

The marquee college basketball coaches came to watch Travis McKie on a regular basis. North Carolina’s Roy Williams created a stir at Patrick Henry High School at the Colonial District tournament.

DeMatha tops John Marshall 69-65  02/01/09 12:01 AM

Slamfest VIII turned into a coming out party for John Marshall guard Tahir Little. Little, a sophomore, became eligible with the start of the second semester, and he made his first appearance last night at Benedictine, where the Justices fell to national power DeMatha High of Hyattsville, Md., 69-65. The Justices, ranked No.4 in The Times-Dispatch Top 10, ventured out of the Colonial District title race for Slamfest’s marquee game.

John Marshall Showcase boys: No. 6 John Marshall 92, No. 3 Huguenot 70  12/26/08 10:56 PM

The John Marshall High School Justices, ranked sixth in the Times-Dispatch Top 10 boys basketball poll, pounded third-ranked Huguenot High 92-70 tonight. Playing before a raucous packed house at John Marshall, Travis McKie led the Justices with a career-high 37 points and seven rebounds. Senior Randall Braxton pulled down 10 rebounds and point guard Randall Ward dished out eight assists for John Marshall.
