Cameron Foundation seeks nominees for awards
The Cameron Foundation is soliciting nominations for its two annual recognition award programs. The awards total $80,000 for nonprofit organizations within the foundation's service area of Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell and the counties of Dinwiddie, Prince George, Sussex and the portion of Chesterfield south of state Route 10. The awards will be presented at the foundation's annual awards ceremony in October.

Prince George official offers ideas to close budget gap
PRINCE GEORGE—The county administrator last night offered two recommendations to balance her proposed budget, which had to be cut after the Board of Supervisors rejected a property-tax rate increase. County Administrator Brenda G. Garton had included a 5-cent increase in the property-tax rate in her proposed $112.3 million financial plan for the next fiscal year. But on March 25, the board decided to keep the current rate of 80 cents per $100 of assessed value.

Prince George school budget gets OK’d
PRINCE GEORGE—After discussing last-minute cuts because of reduced state funds, the county School Board last night passed a $60.1 million budget that the board chairman called historic. The spending plan for the 2008-09 school year exceeds the current budget by about $7 million. It provides teachers with an average 8.74 percent salary increase, including 3 percent for cost of living. Teachers at the top of the salary scale will get bonuses. Support staff will get 5 percent increases.

Prince George budget proposes increases in teacher, staff pay
The Prince George School Board will have a public hearing on its proposed school budget today. The $60.4 million spending plan proposes new teaching positions and salary increases for teachers and staff. Enrollment for next school year is projected at 6,300, up from 6,173 currently. The proposed budget is $7 million more than this year's. Most of the money—$42.2 million—would come from the state.

Divers unsuccessful in hunt for missing man
State police divers searched a Dinwiddie County stream yesterday for a man missing since last weekend and came up empty-handed, according to Sheriff B.B. Rhodes. The county will make another ground search for 25-year-old Randy Marion today, Rhodes said. "They searched every nook and cranny," Rhodes said, but the seven State Police divers found nothing.

Sussex fearful of possible arrival of Navy landing field
SUSSEX—Tiffany Poole left Virginia Beach to escape the constant noise. Now it may follow her to Wakefield. "Honestly, I moved out here to get away from all that," she said. Along with other residents, Poole is unhappy about the potential construction of a practice landing field for Navy jets in Sussex County. The Navy said last week that it will study five sites, including three in Southside Virginia and two in northern North Carolina.
