Utah’s dinosaur bones  10/18/09 12:01 AM

Local legend has it that cowboys, sheep herders and trappers long knew about the huge fossilized bones that regularly surfaced from the ancient rock underlying Utah’s dinosaur country. But not until steel magnate Andrew Carnegie learned of the bones did Vernal and the surrounding Ashley Valley get the nation’s attention 100 years ago. Now Vernal, a Western outpost whose wide streets are lined with energy, mining and agricultural businesses, makes a business of its bones. It’s home to a large dinosaur museum and is the base for a National Park Service site at a bone quarry Carnegie established in 1909.

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—With help from their Maryland teammates and a spirited crowd, Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver enthusiastically celebrated one final victory on their home court. Coleman had 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, Toliver scored 17, and top-seed Maryland advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament with a 71-56 victory over Utah on Tuesday night.

Utah attorney general says BCS may violate antitrust laws  01/06/09 6:04 PM

SALT LAKE CITY—Utah’s attorney general is investigating the Bowl Championship Series for a possible violation of federal antitrust laws after an undefeated University of Utah team was left out of the college football national title game for the second time in five years. Attorney General Mark Shurtleff contends the BCS unfairly puts schools like Utah—a member of a conference that has no automatic bid to the lucrative bowl games—at a competitive and financial disadvantage.

The Rose Bowl is where Southern California plays next if it beats UCLA tomorrow. What a pity. The “granddaddy of all bowls” pales in comparison to what the Trojans deserve—a chance to play for the national championship.
