Varina student from Haiti gets housing offers
Everson Merant, the Haitian high school student whose family left him behind last month, soon will have his choice of new homes. Since an article about his situation was published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Saturday, “we have had such a huge response,“ said Kathryn G. Noah, assistant principal at Varina High School, where Merant is a junior.

Matt Gorski scored 25 of his 28 points over the final three quarters in leading the Titans over the Blue Devils. David Robinson recorded 15 points for Cosby. Girls Basketball: Cosby 72, Varina 45
Cosby held visiting Varina to four points in the second period to put a strangle hold on the Central Region first round girls basketball playoff game. It was the Titans’ 16th straight victory. Becca Wann finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds to pace the Titans. She also added eight assists. Andrea Bertrand was 8 of 9 from the field, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc to finish with 21 to lead the Titans. Jazmin Pitts added 19 points, four blocks and six rebounds.

Marquia Jones scored 14 points and recorded seven assists as Highland Springs defeated Varina to advance to the district championship game. DeVonte Smith scored 15 points and Varina took an early lead, then let the margin slip all the way to three points at the end of the third quarter before finally beating Lee-Davis. The Blue Devils turned a first quarter tie into a blowout, outscoring Hanover 39-23 across the second and third periods. Raneka Dunaway scored 18 points and had three steals and Ashley Vieria added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils. Micha Cox got three steals. Mariah Douglas and Taylor Woolard scored 12 and 10 points respectively for Hanover.HANOVER (6-11)

Girls basketball: No. 8 Henrico 64, Varina 41
Henrico’s Bria Harris put her name beside every statistical category in the book. She finished the night with 20 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocks as the Lady Warriors came away with the Capital District win. Bria Robinson added 15 points, six assists and 10 rebounds in helping Henrico collect 43 total boards.

In the Capital District girls rivalry game, Highland Springs came away with the victory over Varina. The Springers used a 23-point fourth period, holding the Blue Devils to just seven over the same frame, to put a stamp on the win. Kyra Coleman scored 21 points to the Springers. Linisha Tinsely added 17 and Takeisha Jefferies chipped in 11.

Raneka Dunaway, Tierra Bell and Stequita Cooper were a Varina three-hit combination that knocked out Clover Hill in a nondistrict girls basketball game yesterday. Dunaway, Bell and Cooper finished with 14, 11 and 10 points respectively for the Blue Devils. Lindsey Tucker scored a game-high 17 points for the Cavaliers. VARINA (11-5)
