Varina’s late comeback pays off in OT

Varina’s Dominique Williams tries to elude the grasp of Thomas Dale defenders during the second quarter. The Blue Devils defeated the Knights 20-14 in overtime after staging a furious fourth-quarter rally. What a comeback. Even Varina coach Stu Brown had trouble believing what his top-ranked Blue Devils accomplished in the final quarter last night against No. 6 Thomas Dale.

High school notes  09/16/09 12:01 AM

“Technically,“ Atlee football coach Roscoe Johnson said, “we’re supposed to be better next year.“ The Raiders might be ahead of schedule. Atlee, which takes on Patrick Henry this week, is 2-0 for the first time in the school’s 19-year football history. Only four seniors start on each side of the ball, and Johnson said he has some talented players waiting on the JV team.

Football: No. 1 Varina 42, No. 7 Dinwiddie 40  09/11/09 11:34 PM

DINWIDDIE—Top-ranked Varina and No. 7 Dinwiddie put on the show everyone expected from the defending Division 6 and Division 5 Central Region champions. The teams battled from the 75-yard opening kickoff return by Varina’s Jerel Harrison to Dinwiddie quarterback Chris Hall’s fifth touchdown pass and third TD catch by Quintaze Jackson late in the fourth quarter.

Dinwiddie: a challenging opener for No. 1 Varina  09/11/09 12:01 AM

With the economy the way it is, the Varina football program went looking for a season-opening opponent that was closer to home than George Washington-Danville or Gar-Field. Central Region Division 6 champion Varina wanted a quality opponent, as well. The Blue Devils got what they wanted. And maybe more. Ranked No. 1 in the preseason Times-Dispatch Top 10, Varina opens its season on the road at No. 7 Dinwiddie tonight. The Blue Devils’ trip time to the southernmost outpost in the region is shorter by a few minutes. The Generals won the Division 5 region title and were state runners-up last year.
