VCU NOTES: Saintil facing misdemeanor charge
VCU basketball player Terrance Saintil is facing a misdemeanor charge of public building damage. Saintil was wrestling with another student over an ice cream sandwich and punched a window in a dorm room at Ackell Residence Center on April 15, according to VCU spokeswoman Pam Lepley, speaking for the university police. Lepley did not have a damage estimate. Saintil has a hearing scheduled for July 31 in Richmond General District Court.

Colleges roundup: Hoos rally past Hokies
BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech’s season ended yesterday with a 6-4 loss to Virginia. The Cavaliers will continue playing at the ACC tournament, and potentially the NCAA tournament. The Hokies will not qualify for the conference tournament, finishing with a 12-17 record. Their 32-21 overall mark, however, represents their best winning percentage since 1999.

Hokies slip past Cavaliers
BLACKSBURG—Austin Wates hit a walk-off home run with one out in the 10th inning to lift Virginia Tech to a 5-4 victory over No. 10 Virginia yesterday to conclude the regular season. The Hokies’ win breaks their 12-game losing streak to Virginia which dated to the 2003 season. Klint Reed (L.C. Bird) went 2 for 5 with a run and Ronnie Shaban (Cosby) had a hit and scored twice for the Hokies.

Baseball: U.Va. downs VCU
Fans left Davenport Field last night not knowing if the University of Virginia baseball team would play there again this season. The Cavaliers don’t know either. U.Va., ranked No.10 by Baseball America, beat Virginia Commonwealth University 4-1 before a crowd of 1,566. It was the final regular-season game for the Wahoos (38-10-1), but they could be back at Davenport as hosts of an NCAA tournament regional.

VCU golfer from Sweden eager to change travel plans
He’s got a ticket to fly home Monday, but sophomore Mark Jargren will compete with his teammates in the NCAA golf regionals Thursday-Saturday in New Jersey.
VCU’s Griffin named CAA’s top golfer
Virginia Commonwealth University junior Lanto Griffin has been voted Colonial Athletic Association golfer of the year by league coaches. VCU’s Matt Ball and James Madison’s Jeff Forbes were named co-coaches of the year. Griffin’s 72.34 scoring average for the year was the second-best mark in the conference. He finished among the top five in four events.

Virginia Commonwealth’s newest recruit, Troy Daniels, may not be done growing, which could provide the Rams with a sizable shooting guard. “By the time VCU gets him, he’ll probably be about 6-5,“ said Mickey Hardy, Daniels’ coach at William Fleming in Roanoke. Daniels, rated a three-star recruit [out of five] by Rivals.com, signed his national letter of intent yesterday. He averaged about 17 points and 6 rebounds for Fleming, which lost in the state Group AAA championship game to King’s Fork.

VCU falls by one at Northeastern
BROOKLINE, Mass.—M.L. Morgan went 4 for 5 with an RBI and a run, but it wasn’t enough as VCU fell to Northeastern 6-5 yesterday in a CAA meeting. Richard Gonzalez finished 2 for 4 with an RBI, and R.J. Schenk and Michael Cheatham each had a hit and drove in a run for the Rams, who outhit the Huskies 12-9. Doug Otto and Andrew Dimino each hit a double and Joe Van Meter had an RBI.

Thomas sparks VCU
BROOKLINE, Mass.—Ian Thomas pitched a complete game, threw seven strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs to lead VCU to a 7-2 victory over Northeastern yesterday in a CAA meeting. Doug Otto delivered a bases loaded two-RBI single in the seventh inning to push the Rams’ lead to 5-1, Andrew Dimino and Joe Van Meter each drove in a run, and Matt Leskiw crossed the plate three times for VCU.

VCU notes
Virginia Commonwealth officially added a recruit capable of playing point guard yesterday. But the Rams also subtracted a highly rated recruit at the position. Darius Theus, a 6-3 guard out of Norcom High in Portsmouth who committed to the Rams this past weekend, signed yesterday. That was tempered by word that Ben Eblen will be released from his letter of intent in the wake of VCU’s coaching change.

VCU recruit Eblen asks for release
New Virginia Commonwealth University basketball coach Shaka Smart said that highly rated recruit Ben Eblen has asked to be released from his letter of intent. Eblen, a senior point guard at Florida Air Academy in Melbourne, Fla., was recruited by former VCU coach Anthony Grant. Eblen signed to play for the Rams in the fall. He said he chose VCU because of the relationship he established with Grant and his staff.

Final-round surge lifts VCU golf team to title
Postseason hopes for Virginia Commonwealth’s golf team came down to the last round at this weekend’s Colonial Athletic Association tournament at the Callaway Gardens course in Pine Mountain, Ga. The Rams, sitting on the bubble for the NCAA tournament, were tied for third place, 12 shots behind Georgia State. VCU coach Matt Ball figured his team couldn’t finish lower than second and make the NCAA tournament field as an at-large entry.

Smart’s first VCU recruit fills need
A contact nurtured by Shaka Smart in his previous place of employment paid off in his first recruit for Virginia Commonwealth University. Smart, hired by VCU 2½ weeks ago to replace Anthony Grant, got a commitment this weekend from Darius Theus, a 6-3, 175-pound guard out of Norcom High in Portsmouth. Theus said he will sign a letter of intent today.

Area contacts helped Rhoades
Two days after Shaka Smart took over as Virginia Commonwealth’s new basketball coach, Mike Rhoades extended a helping hand. Randolph-Macon’s head coach sent Smart, a Florida assistant, a text message offering to fax names and numbers of high school contacts in the area and the state. It was a welcome gesture that Rhoades has made to other coaches, including former VCU coach Anthony Grant.

Otto sparks VCU’s 8-4 win over Richmond
Fishing was the hook in Virginia Commonwealth’s 8-4 win at the University of Richmond yesterday.
