VCU, kidney foundation fashion shows
An upcoming fashion show, staged to raise awareness of organ donation, will feature models who have either given or received a kidney for transplant. The inaugural Style for Life fashion show and luncheon, sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias, will take place Thursday at The Jefferson Hotel from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $50 per person.

Man shot in Richmond traffic stop still in critical condition
Nathan O. Randolph, the motorist shot Wednesday morning by police during a traffic stop in Richmond, remained in critical but stable condition yesterday at VCU Medical Center. Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael N. Herring said preliminary findings suggest three Richmond officers and one Virginia Commonwealth University officer acted appropriately in defending themselves by shooting at Randolph. Herring said the officers fired more than five shots and that Randolph was hit three or four times after getting out of his car and confronting police with a large knife.

The defining moment in the relationship between the historic Oregon Hill community and VCU President Eugene Trani occurred sometime after the 2003 VCU Master Plan had been released. Oregon Hill residents could rest easy—for in that plan a reason ably sized natatorium was scheduled to be built on property VCU owned at West Cary and South Cherry streets.
Birthday party benefits police athletic league
The Richmond Police Athletic League got a $1,686 boost from Rob Ukrop’s 39th birthday on April 2. For his 13th annual celebration at Chuck E. Cheese, the birthday boy provided the pizza and tokens. Participants contributed $1 or more to support the league.

Noted geneticist will speak at VCU’s graduation
Francis Collins, former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health, will speak at Virginia Commonwealth University’s 2009 spring commencement. A physician and geneticist, Collins is noted for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and his leadership of the Human Genome Project, a complex multidisciplinary enterprise that in 2003 resulted in the completion of a finished sequence of the human DNA instruction book.

Rodney Monroe, then Richmond’s police chief, publicly spoke of that shortly before he graduated in 2007. But far less apparent were how lapses in judgment and university procedures combined to allow him to get that diploma even though he fell far short of requirements for his bachelor’s degree.
