Vinson spearheads Group AAA all-state team  07/24/09 12:01 AM

AAA softball Times-Dispatch softball player of the year Lauren Vinson of Prince George headlines the Richmond area selections to the Virginia High School Coaches Association Group AAA all-state team. Joining Vinson, who spearheaded the Royals’ first Central Region championship and advancement to the state semifinals, are Leona Rainey of Mills Godwin and Morgan Reynolds of Cosby. Rainey was the Colonial District and Central Region player of the year. Reynolds was the Dominion District player of the year.

Mills Godwin pair honored

AAA soccer The Mills Godwin boys and girls soccer teams finished as state runners-up in the Group AAA playoffs in early June. Senior midfielder Anne Lumpkin, the Central Region girls player of the year, is the state player of the year. She is the first state POY from the Central Region since A.B. Robbins of Mills Godwin earned the honor as a junior in 1999.

VHSCA FOOTBALL: Pick for six decides it  07/11/09 12:01 AM

HAMPTON—As potent as the offenses were in the Virginia High School Coaches Association football game, a defensive play by Hanover linebacker Kenny Fryman turned out to be the difference. Fryman intercepted a Luke Harris pass and returned it 23 yards for the winning score in East’s 38-31 victory over the West last night at Darling Stadium.

Foley, Brinkley have fun in VHSCA all-star games  07/08/09 12:01 AM

HAMPTON - The last time Michelle Foley played in a basketball game was a Central Region tournament semifinal loss to Atlee. That was late February. The last time Josh Brinkley played in a basketball game that counted was a Central Region tournament quarterfinal loss to Petersburg. That was late February. Brinkley did play in the 804 All-Star game in April before a packed house at Matoaca High.

Graduates have final fling in all-star games  07/07/09 12:01 AM

Coaches and newly graduated athletes have descended upon Hampton and Newport News for the annual Virginia High School Coaches Association clinics and all-star games. This is the 16th year the summer rite has been based in Hampton. The all-star games are a last fling for many of the athletes before they head off to colleges and universities. Athletes from all three Virginia High School League classifications (Group AAA, AA and A) are housed and fed at Hampton University. Five of the eight all-star games are scheduled at Christopher Newport University.
