Artist forms personal monuments from pieces of guns

Richmond’s premier public sculptor is blazing trails with lethal intent. The approximately 30 works in Paul DiPasquale’s first one-man Richmond show in 11 years each consists of parts of firearms - everything from AK-47 assault rifles to single-shot Derringers - that are partially embedded in concrete studded with seashells. The smallest weighs about 5 pounds and fits easily in the hand. The largest stands 4 feet tall and tips the scales at 60 pounds.

Beach man sentenced to jail for ‘sexting’ with girl, 16 A judge sentenced a Virginia Beach rock singer yesterday to one year in prison for soliciting nude pictures of a 16-year-old Louisa County girl. Christopher A. Atkinson, lead singer of the rock band Celebrity Gunfight, pleaded guilty yesterday in Louisa Circuit Court to soliciting nude pictures of a minor, said Louisa Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Rusty McGuire.

Groups caring for seized animals  01/30/09 12:01 AM

Animal-rescue groups are caring for scores of dogs and horses seized from an Isle of Wight County farm. The Virginia Beach SPCA is working with rescue groups to medically assess more than 70 dogs that were seized from the Zuni horse farm Jan. 19. In the Richmond area, the United States Equine Rescue League is caring for 10 horses seized from the property. Fourteen others are being cared for in the Tidewater area.

VIRGINIA BEACH (AP)—A reptile keeper at the Virginia Aquarium was bit by a Komodo dragon and is being treated for her injuries. The Virginia Beach aquarium’s curator of reptiles and mammals said the worker was bitten on the hand today while feeding the carnivorous lizard. Curator Chip Harshaw said he came to the worker’s aid as she was in the dragon’s grip, and the Komodo released her hand.

VIRGINIA BEACH—Jurors will resume deliberations in the case of a Virginia sailor charged with killing his wife. Navy Lt. Michael Lee Everage and his wife, Robyn, were preparing to divorce when her body was found in the woods in Virginia Beach on Feb. 21, 2007. Prosecutors claim Everage beat his wife to death with a truck mirror because she had information of his sexual affairs with both women and men that could have ruined his military career and his chance of keeping custody of his three children.

Competing health-care organizations Bon Secours Virginia and Sentara Health announced a joint proposal yesterday for a 200-bed hospital in the Princess Anne section of Virginia Beach. It would require approval from the State Health Commission. Bon Secours and Sentara had come up short with separate plans for new hospitals in Virginia Beach. Sentara’s proposal for a 90-bed hospital was turned down in March, while Bon Secours received permission for a hospital with 120 beds, fewer than it wanted. Both companies have appealed in court.
