For Leesburg resident Lucas M. Brown, a church-affiliated Habitat for Humanity project in the heart of Appalachia opened his eyes to a new world. And Virginia Military Institute 1st class Cadet Gregory E. Lippiatt melded lessons from medieval history and the Rat Line to create a real-world outlook. The two and 30 others this weekend were chosen as Rhodes Scholars, gaining as much as three years of study at Oxford University, all costs paid.

Fitzgerald, who graduated from Amelia’s former all-black Russell Grove High School. Fitzgerald, a graduate of Virginia Union University, also taught school in Amelia.
