Wilson a captain for U.S. team in world football tourney
David Wilson, an incoming freshman running back for Virginia Tech’s football team, has been named one of the United States’ four captains for the inaugural International Federation of American Football Junior World Championship. Wilson, who attended George Washington High in Danville, is regarded by recruiting Web sites as the best player in Tech’s 2009 class. Rivals.com rates him as the nation’s fourth-best running back.

Va. Tech names Brizendine soccer coach
Virginia Tech yesterday promoted assistant men’s soccer coach Mike Brizendine to replace Oliver Weiss, who resigned earlier this month after seven seasons as the Hokies’ head coach. Brizendine had been Weiss’ top assistant for the past five seasons. Brizendine came to Tech from Bridgewater College, where he was the men’s and women’s assistant in 2000 and the men’s head coach from 2001-03. In 2003, he was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference coach of the year after leading Bridgewater to a 12-6 record, its best ever.
