WOODY COLUMN: Rainstorm and Hokies poured it on  09/27/09 12:01 AM

The Marching Virginians, 330 strong, weren’t allowed to march and play their music on the Lane Stadium field. Instead, they performed from their end zone seats out of deference to a field that was all but underwater. And speaking of submerged, how about those Miami Hurricanes? They came here as a team on the prowl. Young. Quick. Fast. Potent. Hungry. They came here 2-0 and as a prime topic in the national sports conversation.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine met for 2½ hours yesterday with family members of Virginia Tech students killed or wounded in the massacre in 2007, but there were mixed feelings about what progress was made. “We had a good meeting; it was very candid,“ Kaine said afterward. Jim Carney, whose daughter Katelyn was wounded, agreed. “It was very informative and instructive. A lot of issues were discussed.“

Hardwick wins by a shot  09/26/09 12:01 AM

The Virginia Tech men’s golf team comes to town this weekend to prepare for the VCU Shootout tournament at Hermitage Country Club. The first thing the players want to see isn’t the course. They want to see the hardware their coach, Jay Hardwick, picked up yesterday at the Senior State Open of Virginia. Hardwick, the first-round leader, birdied the 15th and 16th holes at the Country Club of Virginia’s Westhampton Course, then sank a four-foot par putt on the last hole to win by a stroke over two other professionals, defending champion Jon Corliss and Dean Sumner.

Miami’s Harris erases doubts  09/22/09 12:01 AM

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Jacory Harris has an enemy—himself. For the first two games, Miami’s quarterback embraced the us-against-the-world philosophy, borne from a notion that the Hurricanes weren’t truly considered contenders in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Those slights were his motivation. “We want everybody to doubt us this year, because that’s going to keep us going,“ Harris said. “As long as everybody keeps doubting us, we’re going to keep on truckin.‘“

Hollywood ending suits Blacksburg  09/20/09 12:01 AM

BLACKSBURG The Virginia Tech Hokies were out of offense, out of timeouts and, seemingly, out of hope. “When you’ve got a Tyrod, you’ve always got a chance,“ said Hokies coach Frank Beamer. Yes, but it looked like the Hokies had blown their last, best chance with 2:07 left in the game. Needing nine yards on fourth down, the pass of Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor hit wide receiver Dyrell Roberts in the hands, and the ball fell harmlessly to the ground.

Tech looks to rental car program to ease parking woes

Virginia Tech has a short-term answer to its long-term campus parking problem. Students—and faculty members, university employees and even Blacksburg residents—can now rent a car by the hour and, better yet, find a place to park it at the vehicle-packed school. U Car Share, a subsidiary of the U-Haul company, has put four fuel-efficient car models—and another one is on the way—and a pickup truck at Tech.
