U.Va. wins ACC soccer title
Last year’s Times-Dispatch boys soccer player of the year, Thomas Dale’s Will Bates, had the only goal of the match yesterday as Virginia continued its monthlong unbeaten streak by defeating N.C. State for the ACC tournament championship. Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo was named the tournament’s most valuable player, logging a shutout in every game to extend his streak to eight-consecutive matches. Bates’ goal was his eighth of the season, a team high.

Flooding problems expected from Ida
Remnants of Hurricane Ida will continue to sweep across eastern and central Virginia today and bring coastal flooding, winds and as much as 7 inches of rain in isolated areas. “This will be a prolonged period of heavy northeast winds, and we are issuing moderate to severe flood warnings” for coastal Virginia, said Mike Montefresco, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service at Wakefield.

Tainted beef may be linked to 2 deaths
ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Contaminated fresh ground beef caused a possible E. coli outbreak that killed two people and sent 16 others to hospitals, federal health officials said yesterday. Twenty-eight people may have become ill after eating beef produced by Fairbank Farms of Ashville, N.Y., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. All but three of the suspected infections are in the northeastern U.S., and 18 are in New England, said CDC spokeswoman Lola Scott Russell.
