MILAN - AC Milan is hoping for compensation from the U.S. Soccer Federation because defender Oguchi Onyewu was injured in a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica. “I’m very angry because once again the national teams take players and we lose out due to injuries,“ AC Milan chief executive officer Adriano Galliani told Italian media yesterday.

Sports briefs: Wake gives Gaudio extension  10/15/09 12:01 AM

Wake Forest gave coach Dino Gaudio a contract extension through the 2013-14 season. School officials said in conjunction with the team’s preseason media day that Gaudio’s deal was extended two more seasons. Details of the contract were not available because the private school generally does not discuss them. Gaudio has gone 41-20 with one week at No. 1 nationally and one berth in the NCAA tournament.

Spiller says toe injury won’t sideline him  09/23/09 12:01 AM

Clemson tailback C.J. Spiller said he’ll play Saturday against No. 15 TCU despite a toe injury. The Tigers’ star did not return after the second of two rain delays in last week’s 25-7 victory over Boston College. Spiller first had the problem in the season-opening win over Middle Tennessee on Sept. 5 when he came out early in the second quarter.

ACC: Wake prevails on Skinner’s TD  09/13/09 12:01 AM

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Riley Skinner scored on a 1-yard keeper with 2 seconds remaining and Wake Forest rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat Stanford 24-17 yesterday. Skinner finished 18 of 26 for 187 yards with a touchdown pass for the Demon Deacons (1-1). His 44-yard pass to third-stringer Lovell Jackson with less than a minute left set up his winning score.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Robert Griffin completed his first eight passes, finishing with 136 yards passing and a touchdown, to help Baylor beat Wake Forest 24-21 yesterday. Kendall Wright ran for a TD, wide receiver Ernest Smith passed for a score and David Gettis caught one for the Bears, who opened last season with a 41-13 home loss to the Demon Deacons.

Henderson spurs Duke  02/23/09 12:01 AM

Gerald Henderson scored a career-high 35 points and No. 9 Duke held on to beat No. 8 Wake Forest 101-91 last night in an ACC game. Jon Scheyer added a career high with 30 points for the Blue Devils (8-4, 22-5). They twice led by 22 points in the first half and let the Demon Deacons cut the gap to two points before finally putting them away with a 16-6 run that was keyed by Henderson.

Iman Shumpert hit a pull-up jumper with 1 second remaining to lift Georgia Tech to its first Atlantic Coast Conference win, a 76-74 upset of No. 6 Wake Forest yesterday. Wake Forest committed two turnovers in the final 35 seconds and lost to the ACC’s last-place team only three days after beating top-ranked Duke. Georgia Tech senior Alade Aminu had 10 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks, and younger brother Al-Farouq Aminu led Wake Forest with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

James Johnson’s layup with 0.8 seconds remaining helped No. 6 Wake Forest upend No. 1 Duke 70-68 last night in an ACC game. Johnson finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Al-Farouq Aminu had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Demon Deacons. They bounced back from last week’s home loss that knocked them from No. 1 by leading the Blue Devils for nearly the entire way—before letting a late 13-point lead slip away and recovering just in time to claim the fifth victory over a top-ranked team in school history.

The Virginia Tech Hokies upset the top-ranked and previously undefeated Wake Forest Demon Deacons men’s basketball team 78-71 tonight. Wake (3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, 16-1) was the last undefeated team in NCAA Division I basketball. The Hokies (3-1, 13-5) won for the third time in Virginia Tech’s nine games against top-ranked teams in school history.

Dino Gaudio knew his Wake Forest team probably would move to No. 1 after becoming Division I’s only unbeaten team. “I told the team when we got off the bus on Saturday, ‘If you guys are happy being No. 1 on Jan. 19, then you’re not the team I think you are,‘“ Gaudio said yesterday. “All we care worry about is getting better. There is tremendous room for improvement with these lads.“

Wake Forest transfer Skeen seen as boost for VCU  01/12/09 10:43 PM

Jamie Skeen, a touted forward who played two seasons at Wake Forest before running into academic issues and transferring, started classes at Virginia Commonwealth University today. Skeen, who’s 6-8, 250 pounds, will be eligible to play for the Rams at the end of the first semester next season. He will have 1½ seasons of eligibility.

Wake Forest leads UR by 2 at halftime  12/19/08 8:12 PM

At halftime, the Richmond Spiders are giving No. 10 Wake Forest fits. The Spiders, using a balance attack, trail only 37-35. The Spiders trailed by as many as 14 points in the first 20 minutes. They closed with an 18-6 run to put themselves in position to earn only their second win over a top-10 team in the 37-year history of the Robins Center.
